Anyone want Mexican Heather?

Northeast, AR(Zone 7a)

Mexican Heather (Cuphea something) is a great plant, especially for tropical climates. In my zone 7, it's an annual, but in 9 and 10 it's perennial. It grows fast and quickly becomes a beautiful 2 ft shrub loaded with tiny purple blooms and small shiny dark green leaves. Below is a picture. They love sun and heat and are very drought tolerant. They'll freeze here this winter so they need to be adopted.

I have two or three small plants to trade. If anyone is interested, I'll let you know what else I have to trade (named cannas, adeniums, elephant ears, daylilies, etc) and maybe we can work out a large trade of various plants.

I'd love to adopt some for you but i dont know what i'd trade with you. Most of my plants are tropicals too. Id be happy to foster an extra one for you and send it back in the Spring if that makes any sense.

what kind of EE do you have?

Northeast, AR(Zone 7a)

I have Wentii, Illustris, Black Magic, and the common green colocasias.

Celt, I'd trade for DVDs in the comedy, romance, or drama categories, or anything practical that I can use for my gardens or home. My gardens are done in a butterfly/ranch theme, if that helps any.

Thanks for responding, y'all.

Hey Celt, I've dmailed you.

Hey, butterflychaser, if you don't trade them all you might try overwintering them. I'm also in 7a and have 2 of them that I've had for 3 yrs. I cut them to the ground right before or right after the first freeze and cover them with 2 or 3 inches of fine organic material (I use Humore) and some pine straw. Then when the forsythia starts blooming I uncover them.

Admittedly, our last couple of winters have not been real cold ones - not many days below 15 degrees I would say. And they are on the south side of my house so I guess that soil stays a little warmer. But even if I lose them in the next really cold winter, I've gotten more of my money's worth out of them.

Just a thought if you get left with one.

Hi Sherry,

I used to overwinter them, but I already have too much to bring in for winter. I am culling out a lot of my tropicals. It's just more trouble than I want to deal with. I'm trying to simplify my life now.

I have four left. I can buy more in the spring if I decide I want more, but I'm getting tired of doing annuals and tropicals now that my gardens are just so full.

Anyone else wanna trade?
