I sprayed with a fruit tree spray 3 or 4 times, but probably not enough. What caused the brown marks on the skin. Appears to be only on the surface. There seems to be some rust on the tree leaves.

Probably two problems. Here's a close-up of something on the side of fruit.
The round dark spots appear to be some kind of apple scab, no biggie. The brown skin is called russetting, don't know what causes that, around here it is blamed on varietal characteristics and cultural conditions.
Thanks for the info. I will research both ideas.
Golden Delicious seems more prone to russeting and in my case...freckleing.....especially on the north side of the tree.
