Oh no! A record low of 38 tonight!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

My very first brugs ever, started from cuttings last fall, have their first buds about to open, and now the forcast says a low of 38 tonight. Will they be alright? They're in the ground and too big to cover. I'm so worried about these I've been babying all summer. Is there any hope?
Thanks,
Neal

Mine are all outside and it is getting that cold here- they will be ok- it's the frost that zaps them

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

I agree...mine have been outside with hail coming down..no problem last year when I was running around trying to take cuttings and keeping them seperated.....the root ball and the bigger stalks didnt get mushy when they were out in light frost...Judy

Same here it was 41 yesterday, and 40 today, I am not ready to think about digging them up yet.

Geez,
And I just got in the air conditioning a little while ago after waiting 2 hrs in almost 90 degrees at a CVS pharmacy for AAA to come get my son's car with a flat tire. We are supposed to get a cold spell tomorrow. I think they said a low of 65!

Lol .. want to borrow the salt shaker budgie? It's in the low 80's here and low 60's at night. I don't miss freezing cold one iota!

Whew! I feel better. I heard the forcast in the car on my way back into town after a Dr. appointment and had plans for the evening, so no time to do anything about it. They all look fine this morning. 2 of the 5 I have, have formed a Y and developed buds, and after a summer of anticipation the thought of getting to this point and not seeing any flowers was just more than I could stand.

When do you cold zoners dig your brugs and bring them in?

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

gemini if they are in pots I would put them in protection,

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

They're in the ground; do you think I should go ahead and pot them?

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Some of mine are in the ground and I plan on digging next week.
I have some small potted ones I would love to let someone have for the postage but I won't know what it would cost untill I get them to the post office

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I share your race against time, gem... one of my seedlings has Y'd and has started forming buds. Last night the low was around 42F and now at mid-day it's only around 60F. If we get an Indian summer, I might get a bloom or two!

Would the plant go into shock if I brought it indoors? (All of mine are in pots.)

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

Andy, I brought mine in last year at the end of September, and had buds open and blooms until the end of October, inside.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

That's encouraging, Don, I'll try it. Here she is today, after 42F (4C) last night. You can see (I hope) a couple of tiny little buds starting to form, and I hope more are on the way.

Yep, I see them. Congrats. Ü

I would if I were you. According to the Weather Network, it looks like your lows aren't going improve much, and with rain this weekend, they wouldn't get any Sun anyway.

I have all of my big potted Brugs in my Greenhouse right now, in various stages of buds opening, with a smaller one inside. It's just a baby HG so there weren't any buds (maybe next year, I hope). It's starting to lose leaves like crazy already, but that's to be expected. I'll take them all off pretty soon.

Good Luck with those babies!

Thanks for the guidance y'all! Guess it's time to get the ball rolling and get my "plant room" ready for the big fall haul. Uuuuggg, always a job I dread, but I've procrastinated in the past and lost some of my favorite things, so no more of that.

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

I was freaking out too, these overnight lows in the 40's. What's up with that, anyway??? I was just looking on a weather service, and even though it's not supposed to get much higher than 70 during the day for the next week, the night time temps are supposed to be in the 50's. I'm just holding out as long as I can to start making cuttings and moving everything inside.
I'm ready for spring!!

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Indiana_Lily I am like you, they say we will get some warmer temps next week but I am getting ready to start digging soon, and make sure you spray everything OUTSIDE befor you bring the bugs insid.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Right on kareoke! I made the mistake of bringing in lots of multilegged critters in last year. The spraying started today. The plant room is cleaned out, the lights are in working order, and the windows (for what little natural light I get) have been cleaned. So tomorrow is digging day.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Today it is 51 and storming 4 of my big potted brugs were laying down when I got up this morning, and a couple of smaller ones were battered, I think it is time to start planning the bringing in of plants,, I have at least ten, from 2 to 4 ft. high (some in bud) in pots that may have to suffer the woes of being left because I am cutting way back for next year and there are only about five large ones I plan to winter over, I will be having more cuttings in about 10 days, they are loaded with buds but the way the weather has been not sure if they will make it, they do say it will be in 70s next week so thats a good time to do the work on them.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

What insecticides are you using? Is insecticidal soap adequate, or does it take something stronger? I understand spider mites are the main problem. Does carbaryl get them? Malathion is the main miticide, I think. What about critters in the soil? I have a few holes-in-leaves that look like beetle damage, so I'm not worried about them, and I don't see any signs of spider mites, but I don't want to take unnecessary chances.60

And do I need any fungicide?

It's 60F here today at mid-day., and we've been having a lot of rain/overcast/cool days. I'm hoping for an Indian Summer to charge up my little buds and then I'll bring her in and cross my fingers.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

It's been raining hard all day, so no digging today. Not as cool though, and it's supposed to be near 80 this weekend.

kareoke, what varieties do you have that you're thinning out? I've been wanting some yellow and pink varieties.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

gemini_sage I will have cuttings of Isobella (Pink) Dr.Suess (yellow) Snow Cone (white)also Adorathe small 3'potted ones have not bloomed yet and it's raining too hard to check what they are.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I'm definitely interested :) , have'nt even had a bloom yet and I already feel the symtoms of another addiction coming on, lol!

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

yep we have all been through that *LOL*

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

Yeah, this rain can just stop!! Doris, I just checked the radar, and it looks like we are about to be blasted here shortly. GROAN!!! At least it's a bit warmer?
What do you do during the winter when you acquire too many brugs?

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

KEEP FIGHTING THE BUGS, AND GROAN, ASK KELL *LOL*

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

As long as I don't have to deal with the cats that just found Whiskers, and the Cucumber Beetles, I'll be happy. :) I'm just running out of room! I've literally turned into an "aholic." I started out with five, now, I'm getting cuttings for 6 more named brugs, and a decent assortment of unnamed brugs. Oh, and I can't forget the seeds I just received.
Doris, how many do you have? And you, Gemini? I just want to make sure that I'm about as addicted as everyone else.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Well last year I had 165 said I was going to cut down, and I did, this year I had 87 now my goal is to have no more than 10

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

You have got to be kidding me. 165??? And then down to 87???? Where did you put them all during the winter??? I am simply amazed by that, Doris. Wow. My jaw hit the floor when I read that.
Oh, have the storms gotten to you yet?

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

kareoke, you are a true addict indeed! I'd love to see pics.

This is my first year experimenting with them, so I only have 5, the only named one is Verisicolor Peach. All from cuttings recieved last fall. I'm just a fledgeling addict, lol.

It's still pouring the rain here, but at least it's warmer.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Storms have been here for the last two days, everything is drowning, had to bring some pots in to dry out and warm up.
I had a room built onto my house two years ago just for the Brugs, and they were all in there but it was a nightmare with one type of bug after another, the mites were the worst.

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

I'll just be using my guest room -- for now. My bedroom is huge though. The main area is the size of a living room, and then there is a smaller area where my bed, night table, etc., are. I've been in this house for 2 years and have not figured out what to put in the large area of my bedroom, so it is empty. Hmmm... maybe another overwintering room. :)

Mites.... I was thinking about putting a few humidifiers with the plants, so things will stay "humid." Would that help any?

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Our monsoons have finally ended, good grief! 6" of rain in 2 days! So no digging yet. But, I did use the indoor time well and got the plant room cleaned out and lights set up and ready to go.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I'm still leaving mine outside, even though it's going down to 40F at the worst these days. The daytime temps are around 55-65F. The one that is producing flower buds seems not to mind, but I'm tempted to bring her in. All (10) are in pots, not in the ground, so I can bring them indoors if there's a frost predicted. I would so like to have a bloom or two!
