Treat onion sets before planting?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I just picked up some white bulb onion sets for a fall crop (this is my first time with onions)... I'm wondering - should you treat onion sets before planting, like seeds?

What are you planning to treat them with? I never have by the way.

Hadn't really thought that far ahead... I usually just do a disinfecting soak (1 TBL. bleach & 4 cups water) for 10 min. or so to kill any seed surface bacteria - I wasn't sure if that would be appropriate for onion bulbs though.

I've never treated them either; it just never crossed my mind. However, I noticed the store where I buy sets had dusted his boxes of sets with what smelled/looked like Sevin dust...I guess he had witnessed some bugs or knats buzzing around them maybe? (and no, they weren't smelly or mushy but nice and firm.)

Wishing you a good onion crop, kdadams!

By chance where are you all finding onion sets right now? Here in College Station I can't seem to find any and would really like to green onions.

Thanks, Kim

blue eyes - I found some white sets (very basic, nothing fancy) at an organic gardening/pet food store in Houston (haven't seen any at HD or Lowes)... I know you can definitely order them from catalogs right now, if you can't find any locally...

Our local garden centers/nurserys have them. Normally they are put out when people get an itchin' to plant brocoli, cabbage, greens, etc. (I prefer to wait till end of October/November in our area though.)
