Black Witch Moth

I found this moth the other day. It was about 4 inches across. Biggest moth I've ever seen!

Thanks! I wish the photo hadn't been so hazy. I took about a dozen shots of this one. It was fairly early in the morning. Hubby and his brother were loading up a deer blind to haul it to the lease. That's when this moth was found. The markings on this one were really wicked.

Wonderful shot. I had one after Hurricane Ivan and was so thrilled. They are pretty rare for us except for after a tropical disturbance that brings them in

Females are the ones with the white rick-rack looking markings :o) Had one last year that had a wingspan of six inches. They get bigger than that too but they are far and few between out here.

Was finally able to get someone to retrieve data from my crashed computer transferred onto my laptop...here's a female black witch that was perched on my front walkway security door. I like the greenish rainbow of colors in this photo...most times they look just so dark. The broadcloth screen squares are 1/2 inch each...so the wingspan of this one is six inches.
