new greenhouse/cold frame under deck

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

I am having a greenhouse/cold frame built under my deck (the deck is 11' high). The front opening of the area (where I plan to put the doors) gets late day sun and one side of the opening gets good light but not really any sun. the other two sides are completely shaded.

I'm wanting this so I can put my plants in it that can't take freezing (the two days a year it freezes here) or really low temputures. I will also probably propergate plants in it.

The area is about a 10'x10' area.

Is there anything I should think about or get to make this viable? I've never done this before... we figured using the hard plastic that is on greenhouses to build around it. Bottom is going to be wooden. It will have access to electricity for a lamp or heater if/when needed.

Any ideas thoughts from anyone would be welcomed.

Nada, congratulations on building your greenhouse. You might want to install a fan in there for good air circulation, it sounds great.

It will probably be partially finished when you come for the RU.

In order to propagate, I think you will need full sun or do it under lights. Plants don't propagate well in the shade-esp in the winter, so that is one thing that I would think about.

What a clever idea! Since you have power access,...
you will be able to heat/light/circulate air when needed
plus have the advantage of the outside light/solar warmth...sounds like you've got a great plan!

I would use it seasonally down here (winter) and pull stuff out in spring/summer/fall.

My deck isn't that tall, but I do have an area I had thought about making a cold frame in. It gets morning to noon filter sun. The squirrels plant Oak trees under there at times and they grow!!. I would only make it seasonal also though. I will watch and see how yours gets set up.

that was my idea... I just don't want to underthink something and wish I did it later.

Here you can see the before. I used to just have wood piled there. Now it is clean... and we are working on making it more level.

Nice open area to work with.

renatelynne, I'm concerned about the amount of sunlight you'll get there.

Also, what is the plan for the GH roof or the underside of the deck?

I know there will not be that much sun there. But it's texas! Sometimes sun is overrated here! *giggle The roof will be metal siding. There isn't enough space between the deck boards to give any light/sun so it will not really change that.

I figure I might have to supliment some light in the GH. But mostly I want the plants that I keep on the deck and all my catus and succulents alive through the winter. Even putting things over them this last winter didn't save most of them. (we did though have a few days colder than normal which put a lot of stress on things).

I'm tired of having to rebuy plants that should overwinter and probably would if I put them in the garage (but my studio is there so there isn't room). I figured/hoped that with the amount of room there is that I might be able to use it for some seed growing instead of doing all that in the house and garage as I have been.

Thanks for the messages so far. It helps me put things in perspective.
