I just got some seeds from e-bay (reputable merchant), and was just curious as to how long Brug seeds are viable. I think I got a great cross to begin with, but was sent "extra" seeds of a different cross as a gift. What the heck do I do with 30 seeds?? LOL!
Anyway, thanks much for your help!
How long are Brug seeds viable?
Ist peel them . There may not be a seed inside .
Then plant about 10 and hope .
My seeds get about 2 to 4 inches tall and die .
They can take from 3 weeks to 4 months to start / sprout .
Do a search on rockwool , tissue paper , seed starting - most people are starting their seeds in Ziplock Baggies or air tight food containers [ 2 or 3 for a dollar at dollar store ] I wouldn't use the sandwich ones - they are too short .
Indiana I have heard they can be viable for years. Of course the fresher the better results you will have planting them.
Uh, Tony's take on the whole seed thing sounded pretty darned bleak. Thanks, Delisa, that sounds much better. :)
It sounds like Tony might be getting some damping off.Seed 3 to 4 inches tall should not be dying.Try misting the seedlings and soil surface with one of the following.Diluted Physan-20 if you have it or
3% hydrogen peroxide diluted 50/50 with water or sprinkle the soil surface with cinnamon powder.
Tony is right in that many seed are empty. It seems the more advanced the cross, the more empty seed there will be.Plant twice the number of seed that you want adult plants. There are always grasshoppers, snails, caterpillars etc.Store unused seed, tightly closed,in the refrigerator.Don't let them freeze.
Thanks much, gone2seed. If so many seeds are empty, maybe it would be best to remove the cork? That way, there won't be that disappointment if nothing grows?
When I grew my Datura from seed (now about 5 feet tall), I misted the soil several times a day instead of watering so that I wouldn't drown the poor seeds. I'm guessing it's pretty much the same concept with Brug seeds, or any kind of seeds for that matter.
I had damping off , stem rot , mold and I think some drowned . Very bad year . I did try --
Physan 20 -- didn't help - A lot of people said don't use .
Did the H202 - 3 % from one to 1 down to 1 cup in a gallon , 1/2 cup in a gallon, 1/4 cup in a gallon - didn't seem to help . Same with bleach
Everything was soaked in bleach , then brushed with either a toothbrush or scrub brush in bleach 1 cup in a gallon .
I was misting everyday with H202 - 3 % in 1/4 cup in a gallon of distilled water . Was told to much water . Started misting every 3 rd day .
I threw away all the cell packs , put all the pots , containers in yard , bought new cell packs , jiffy pellets , rockwool and seed starting mix .
All had bottom heat .
It looks like either the spiders or the ants were causing most of the problems that too much water wasn't . Was told both carry spores for stem rot , damping off and a couple of other viruses , molds and stuff . I didn't mark that website and haven't found again .
We had a very wet cool [ not really cold ] winter / spring .
I planted about 60 daturas , 25 Brugs , 20 tomatoes , 10 gayava [sp] 6 white birds of pardise , 6 fushas [sp] ,10 tree tomatos , 18 7 crowns ,12 santa maria in about 5 different times . As soon as they died I would try something different with seeds . .
Right now 1 white bird of pardise , 7 daturas , 2 burgs 1- 7 crowns and 4 tomatos are still alive .
Right now I have 16 daturas - 4 in each air tight container , 6 - 7 crowns , 10 santa maria in air tight containers .
I tore apart rockwool cubes [ 1 x 1 inch in to 4 pieces ] put one capfull of supertrive in 12 oz of water , soak rockwool , squezze out water and put in air tight container , put a seed on each piece . Cover and put on bottom heat .
I think the cold will probably get them but I want to figure out what to do in late Dec / early Feb. when I start seeds again .
I must comiserate with you Tony I had a poor year for sprouting but in hind site it was most likly every think about the excessive unrelenting heat here in TX. In the last 4 weeks I have managed to germinating about 70%. The big change is the weather, no longer 100+ through the day with a low of 80 overnight.
I think next year if I attemp to germinate in the hot months I will chill the seeds in a ziplock bag with a damp piece of paper towel included and leave them in the crisper for 2 weeks before soaking and planting.
Here is a pick of brugs where I gave up on them and used the cup to germinate Day lillies in and look brugs started to appear.
wow, tonyjr, that's just a lot to go through. I'm very sorry. Cuttings next time, maybe?
I think I'll remove the cork, and plant them like my Daturas. I planted 7 seeds, and all seven sprouted.
Well, I guess it will be a good winter project. :)
I did have better luck [ ? ] with cuttings this year . Out of about 30 -35 brugs I have about 20 to 25 still alive .Some in dirt , some in water . I am trying to root some frosted pink in water now .
The [ 2 ] yesterday,today,tomorrow died , 3 hibiscus died , Rasberries 1 still alive , Cappucian cherry , 4 died .
I pruned my rubber tree plant , dusted with rooting hormon , removed bottom leaves and stuck in potting soil [ Last week ]
I have also had a difficult time with losing seedlings that were 3-4" tall. I hate to think of all the seedlings that I have lost after they reached this height. I will definitely try the peroxide mix since I don't have Physan 20. I will also use the cinnamon and maybe this will help keep what is eating the tops off of them. They are all put in sterilized soil but I am having trouble with insects eating the tops off of them and then they shrivel and die. It can be so frustrating at times because after all the time and effort is put in they die after they are tiny plants......but I will not give up yet.
Are growing brug seeds really that much hard than other seeds? This is beginning to indimidate me a bit. I'd love to be able to grow a brug from seed and be able to look at the 6 - 8 foot plant was from something I had grown from seed.
Wow, and I thought moonflower seeds were a pain because of slugs.
Try it , several people here had problems this year . For every one having problem there are at least 50 that don't .
It can be anything from bad luck to water , area , wind , temp , - seeds are like anything else alive .
They want to live and you have to kill them . They don't just die . 99.9% of plants are natural , the sun , bugs and wind all create crosses , if all of them grew you could climb to the moon .
Besides the time you waste if they all die is still better spent than sitting in front of the one eyed monster . [ tv ]
Every year rain , storms , wind and the sun wipes out entire fields of crops - you have a better chance of controlling your plants than farmers do .
