Is anyone in Texas growing these?
I am needing a privacy screen that's taller than my 6' wood fence on 1 side where I have a neighbor. The houses are about 16' apart or so...so a lil' close for comfort. I'd have 8' of that on the gate side that I can plant on. DH says they had these trees growing up and he remembers them not being to tall and quite narrow.
Any experience with them please share! I know there are many many many other ways I could screen my side....and I've got a list...this is just one of the ways I was considering.
Pomegranate Trees
my neighbor has one--its dense, about 13 years old--would get big but he's discovered the joy of hedge clippers...its still about 10' and round. Apparently it thrives on neglect and just lawn watering and rain. I love my neighbor, best neighbor I've ever had, but a gardener he ain't! =)
I am currently growing two in pots; a dwarf and a regular one. I too remember having one in our yard and my dad was always cutting it down to just a small shrub. I remember the fruit was sooooooo good and dark. It would put out so much fruit my brothers used them as hand grenades when they'd play war and I'd laugh when they would explode and seeds would go everywhere.
A neighbor of mine also has one in his back yard and it is extremely tall and very busy. I think it would be a good screen for privacy
My mother in law had one of these and when it bloomed it was a solid ball of color, bright fire engine red. Her plant was over ten years old and at least 12 feet tall and 10 feet diameter. There may be some newer varieties that don't get quite as large. I've seen quite a few of them grown in Houston and east Texas (Sabine county), and all were in the ground and did well.
aren't poms. deciduous?
Yes, they are deciduous, which would mean not much of a screening effect in winter. They also tend to sucker quite a bit. They are beautiful in bloom, though, and worth growing. Yuska
I have been wanting to grow this but the only one I have ever had (really small) died on me. :( I hate when that happens
Wow, great comments from all so far! I think I may be sold on this plant...if not for screening then for all the other benefits. I just need some screen mostly for the 2 cats benefit...they are terrified of people and with the other neighbor in the yard so close I wanted more "protection" for the cats.
I saw where the fruit is very good for your health too. Antioxidants....yum!
Anaid,
Yes I saw this on Oprah the other day and DH mentioned they'd had many of these trees. I've never tried the fruit!
