I have probably 60-70 crocuses, daffodils, tulips, and irises that I was going to plant today. But frost is predicted for tonight and tomorrow night. Should I still plant them today? I hate to put it off for another week, and the weekends are the only time I can plant, unless I want to be out there with a flashlight after dark.
Frost tonight should I still plant?
Maybe a bit late now to answer your question, but frost won't hurt your bulbs at all when they're in the ground. I've even planted them as late as December, and had to peal off a "lid" of frozen mulch and soil to be able to dig, and all were fine.
That's good to know. Thanks! That means I still have time.
Hi, White_Hydrangea--
Around here, I was told that you can plant bulbs as long as you can still dig in the dirt. In fact, I plant spring bulbs up to New Years by spreading out the bulbs and then piling planting mix on top of them to the 6 inch depth. A bit short on the rooting times, then, perhaps, but good enough for most of my projects!
Of course, I wouldn't try this with very special bulbs, but I do try to pick up marked down bulbs in November and plant them this way. It has worked out fine in the past!
In fact, about your first post, I think my bulb book says to wait until AFTER the first frost to plant your bulbs. I like to wait, too, because it gives the critters less time to dine from my bulb buffet.
