Hey everyone,
I haven't participated in any of the big trades yet. Can anyone tell me exactly what the fall trade is about and when it happens? Many of my babies are getting ready to go!
When do we begin fall trades?
Just start a thread here (like folks do over in the plant trading forum) with a list of what you have to offer and a "wish list" of the sorts of things you're looking for in return... As people post replies, you can arrange trades with them right on the thread or finalize things via Dmail as you choose (don't post your address on a thread).
I was hoping to organize some trade boxes to go out this week, but I'm too behind on everything else... hopefully my extras will survive my absence while we're on vacation, and I'll be able to set things up to scoot some boxes out in October before cold weather really sets in... otherwise, I'll just have bigger plants to send out in spring, which is fine since most of them are minis so they won't get too big to pack up.
Have fun!!
Good to get them going now ! Epscias do not ship good after October 1 st. If your like me I shipped year round.
I just have a few boxes to get out. Today Jan Jannich came :)) She is so pretty and young and just as beautiful outside as inside. I sent her home with zillions of plants lot's of Gesneriads. Hope they all make it home . It is so hot out. She was going to keep them in the hotell as her and her sister and Mom are on road trip. It was so wonderful to spend time chatting with her and I did not have to shipped her plants ! Plus I could give her some large ones. I don't want to have any left.
When we start the next trade count me in! I have lots of babies - the past few months nearly all my leaves have produced a litter or two! LOL.
Oh, okay...somehow I thought there was some big organized trade thing that happened in the fall. Maybe just wishful thinking~lol!! But I better start getting my lists together before the cold sets in. Not too long now here in Zone 5!
Thanks for the info, guys :)
I have several mini sinningia cuttings that have been planted already & are established. I would like to trade for either other sinns or streps if anyone would like to.some are sinn. yes, party dude, flair, etc.
Oh mrsbonnie! Let me go and see what I might have to entice you! I'd love to have those!
I thought there was a big organized trade this time of year as well. Was I wrong?
I believe there usually is, but no one has really taken over and organized one this fall. Anybody want to step up to the plate and offer to head it up? I have no clue how to organize one... Does it take a lot of time?
Talk to Lorry she did the last one I believe.
I don't see Lorry around anymore, do you? Maybe I'm just missing her posts... Jill did one, too, I think. I don't know that she's got time right now, though.
Jill, wanna give us some tips on how to organize a trade?
I did a Secret Easter Bunny Trade, and Lorry did a second Secret Trade last spring... You can check my thread for the organization info (top post) to see how that was put together. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/555678/ Basically, it was just a list of people willing to send secret trade boxes to each other.... I tried to match people according to their wants & haves as best as I could, and everyone sent a box to one person and received a box from somebody else. It wasn't really like a big group trade where we tried to organize lots of different trades between people, though -- I can't imagine the logistics on something like that, seems easier for everyone to arrange their own individual trades. But it was a lot of fun, and I put it together early enough that I think it got the ball rolling on winter propagating for spring trades... certainly there were lots of non-secret boxes being sent around last spring!
the group trades tend to be "sender's pick" so they're best if there are a lot of new faces and people have different plants. Or if people have a relatively short list of "haves" so that the sender is likely to have something not on the list..... It might be that there are enough "newbies" for a secret trade, or maybe even break it down to a strep secret trade or sinningia secret trade.
Isn't there also some sort of round robin trading system that they do around here somewhere?
Seed trading round robins work by having a box (or BE) of seeds that gets sent around to one person after another on the list, with everybody taking out what they want and putting in the same number of seed packets in return. I was trying to figure out how to do a round robin or a swap (everything goes to the organizer with return postage, and the organizer divides up the "pot" and sends a packet back to each participant) with AV leaves last year, but the concensus was that leaves would not survive double shipping well.
The "haves" thread is one way that people can tell what their secret trade recipient already has (and likes) in their collection, and I don't think somebody has to be a newbie in order for somebody else to find plenty of things that they'd love to have. I did the sign up for the secret easter trade way in advance so there would be plenty of time to gear winter propagation efforts to producing some special things for the bunny boxes. But there are as many ways to do secret trades as there are organizers!
Mrsbonnie, would you be willing to trade for AVs? Those mini sinningias are precious!
