A fairly small one that I initially thought was a Painted Lady. I don't think so now.
Rather shy, not easy to get close to. This was the third try.

ID Please
I think it's an American Painted Lady, because of the two haloed spots on the underside of the wings, V. virginiensis. Very nice pics of her!
Thanks Fly girl. I take it that there is a distinction between the 'regular' Painted Lady and the American Painted Lady. That halo on the wing? Cool.

Andy, the Painted Lady has 4 smaller eyespots and the West coast Painted Lady has 3 medium blue eyespots. And the American P. Lady is usually found in cooler climates.
Wow Andy, great shots!

Hi, Andy--Beautiful pic of your butterfly!
If you haven't already, have a look at Mass. Butterfly Club's web site. It has really great photos for IDing.

Maybe you should send in your Painted Lady pic?!
Thanks Tabasco. That's a nice site.
