Fritillaria imperialis in the South????

Arlington, TX

HI All
I saw those gorgeous photos from Holland. Now I want to some of these. Anyone in the south grow these with success? I tried once, but they were sale bulbs from HD. I'm in north east Texas zone 7b/8a

I can't in houston, but I think you can. however, from what I've read, it is not the easiest plant to grow.

i am east of dallas. black, heavy clay soil that i amended heavily with sand. i planted 3-4 different kinds of the large flowering ones. they didn't come back. but i got some from hd yrs. ago. planted them out back without doing anything to the soil. they came up every year until i tried digging them to move them to my front flower bed. this is my only experience with them.

Thank you both
I think I discovered what I did wrong and maybe that's why they did well in you less than perfect soil.

They want to be planted then left alone, they need very well drained soil. I was told to plant them, then not to disturb them.

The last time, I planted them in a low area of my beds and that was 2-3 years ago when we had a lot of rain.

So, I guess it's a go... did you plant in full sun or part shade? I have little full sun but lots of part shade, and an area at the edge of a Magnolia where I have iris and I know I won't be tempted to dig around there.

thanks again
cynthia
