Cyclamen Coum

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I just received a few cyclamen coum bulbs. I have no experience with these at all. I understand they should be planted in the shade -- but how deep does the shade need to be? Any special care I should give them? Will they flower in the spring, or will it take a few years? Thanks for your help.

Hi, I'm sure you will enjoy these. They prefer dappled shade and quite dry conditions. As long as they don't get full sun they will be quite happy. Just make sure you plant them quite shallowly in the soil - the top of the tuber should be almost exposed. They normally flower in spring and if they are reasonably big tubers you should get flowers in the first year.

Mine are blooming now, they will bloom until mid Dec. go doment around the last of April... and come back next fall. Plant them shallow like Galanthophile said, just barely covered, and mark them good, or you will forget about them and dig um up later... Try to forget about them, and they will surprise you with a beautiful little flower next fall. They are great planted under shrubs.
