Crocomia lucifer has quite attractive seed heads.

Hi Joy,

We just planted crocosmia lucifer and have seed heads. What do I do with the seeds? Should I cut the seed heads and plant them in a sunny location? Or pot the seed heads and plant in spring? I also noticed the leaves are browning a little. Is this normal or a change in the season? Also, do they spread on their own? This is my first time working with this plant and I just love them! Any suggestions you have is helpful. We live in Seattle Washington - zone 8.

Thanks!

Hi Misosoup,

We're in the same state and the same zone. :-)

I've never actually tried to grow these from seed but many others do. Perhaps you can find someone who has on the Propagation forum? They have self sowed in my garden when I left the seeds on the plants. They can spread this way but the little bulbs multiply each year so you'll end up with a nice size clump with better blooms every year. After a few years you may see a decline in bloom. When you do, dig them up and divide them. They multiply so well that they can become too crowded to bloom.
It's natural for them to turn brown at this time of the year. They go completely dormant for the winter but come back up in the spring.

Thank you for asking about them.

Hi Joy,

Thank you for the advice and encouragement. I can't wait for them to come back and spead their wings.. Hope the rains aren't hitting you too hard.
