Caterpillar Id please

Covington, LA(Zone 8b)

I found this guy crawling around my living room! I put him on the dill, no sale. Then the milkweed - not interested.

I tried the Butterflies and Moths of North America website...since knowing nothing really about him, don't know where to start.

He's dark brown to black with slight monochromatic stripes and four velvety spots near his rear.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just want to help him get back where he belongs.

Peggy, since he's pretty large already and he's wandering around, it might be just looking for a place to pupate. It's not a "common" butterfly cat or we would recognize it so it might be a moth. If it's a moth it will make a cocoon in some leaves or debris etc or bury itself under the dirt. If it's a butterfly it will just go make a chrysalis. Without positive ID you aren't going to know what to do with it so you might just leave him outside to do his thing.

I think moth as well. Put it in some leaf litter in a container with air holes and let us know what comes out in a few weeks

Thanks Donna and KK. He had other plans, and left... but he did look big enough to take care of himself, didn't he - wish I still had him.
