I was in Columbia yesterday and found some great hibiscus on sale at Jarrett's Jungle. They are trying to clear them out to make room for fall plants. It has been raining and I don't have any pictures yet but the plants are large (3' to 4'), full, healthy and covered with buds. If you are willing to winter them over, these are terrific plants. I had to buy 4 and my car looked like a jungle as I was driving home.

You are going to Columbia to drop off some hermit crabs?????????? Hmmmmmm
Jarrett's is a small place on Sunset Drive in West Columbia. They have a web site, it is www.jarrettsjungle.com. You can get directions and a phone number from there. Not sure if they are open on Sunday but you can check,
One of the plants I got was a varigated with green and burgundy, the flower is small and red. The stems are red too.
Oh! that is beautiful!
In case you don't get to Columbia - a branch broke off on the way home and I am trying to root it; I'll keep you in mind if it takes. :-)
Why are you bringing hermit crabs to Cola town?
Thanks! I rescued some hermit crabs who were in a fish bowl with sand and shells, virtually no humidity. I've spent about 100 dollars on them bringing them back to health .. started with 6 ended up with 4 .. 2 were just too far gone. Anyway .. they are a very high maintenance item and I really don't have the time nor inclination to care for them. They are certanly better off in my care then their previous home but they need someone who could attending to them everyday. I joined the Crab Street Journal site dedicated to hermits and put them up for adoption. Someone in Rock Hill is willing to take them off my hands and agreed to meet me in Columbia on Sunday. I'll be glad to have the space back where their 30 gallon tank is. If you'd like to see them:

What a beautiful crabitat! You are a good crab mommy. I am not even going to look at the Crab Street Journal site; I have too many interests now. (But over the years we fostered plenty of hermits when my boys were young.)
I don't know about recuing hermit crabs. I've seen people around here with them on their key chains and many kids have them for pets. I got a feeling those don't live long, on the other hand I could find you a thousands of them. Their all over the place.
LOL
X, are you interested in Fiddler Crabs also? They are eating the organic matter in my potting mix and in general, they are pests; I have about as many as Corey has hermits.
No thanks .. no more crabs for me! My two kitties are enough. I'll really be relieved to have these guys gone. They are the source of many guilt trips I don't need. It was easy to heat the 10 gallon take for them last year, but I was having fits over how to heat a 30!

For what it's worth, I also second Jarrett's Jungle. I have purchased many tropicals from them and really enjoy their small shop.
I'll be moving to Columbus soon from Central Florida and have a question about the hibiscus. Do you have to take them inside for the winter?
Leslie
Columbus (GA) or Columbia (SC) ? I don't know a thing about Columbus but you would have to bring them indoors in Columbia.
Columbia, SC. How big do they get there?
Leslie, the growing season is long and the summers are hot so they can get pretty large. I had several that I kept at 5' so I could still handle them in my sun room for the winter.
I loved living in Columbia and hope you do too; 2 easy hours to the beach or the mountains. When are you moving?
Hi ardesia,
Thanks for the info. We don't know yet when we're moving. It depends on DH's company. Within the next few months.
