wanted : some aroids !!!

Pontotoc, MS(Zone 7b)

I am new to aroids. I will post a picture of the only one I have. I would love to get more. (mine has never bloomed -have only had it one year) By "aroids" I am referring to voodo lilies.

I have poppy seeds to trade if anyone is interested. I also have a few daylilies I could trade although they are not big plants at the moment.

maybe I need to be more specific. It seems as I look at the forum that I don't know the definiton of "aroid". I didn't know elephant ears fell into that catagory. (boy do I have a lot to learn ! I am a daylily person!!!!)

I am wanting more "snake" plants. Does that make it more clear? Guess I am going to have to read up on this subject to see what terms I need to use in order to know what to ask for .LOL.

Any suggestions for a good source to read for a first-timer???? When you google anything you get ten billion sites and I don't want to have to scan through them looking for something basic. I get motion sickness (no kidding !) from scanning.

so the correct thing to ask for ,then, would be Amorphophallus? (is that both singular and plural?)

Vista, CA(Zone 10a)

Do all aroids have similar blooming shape or characteristic?
I am new to aroids as well, and don't actually have any yet (at least I don't think i do!)
Would love to hear any suggestions on which are the easiest (and maybe least smelly..) types? Or see any pics anyone wants to share so I can get an idea of whats out there!
I would also love to trade, but since I have none to share I can offer Epis if anyone is interested!
Thanks for any info!!

Corgimom - I am not sure if Amorphophallus is both, but I think so. I don't have any Amorph's yet myself. Maybe I will collect a few next year.

A good book that you can read about the Arum family is - "Aroids - Plants of the Arum Family" By Deni Brown

This is an excellent book.

Abbie - If you have Philodendron's you have an Aroid.

Sorry I don't have that one but have you checked EBAY, seems they have a lot listed there.

Corgimom, the first pic looks like A.Konjac, and the next one looks like typhonium venosum. Both have the spotted stalks.. I think they call the typhonium snakelily.....

Pontotoc, MS(Zone 7b)

The first picture is mine - the only one I have. The second one is a picture I took of the first one I ever saw. It was in a yard that was on tour and I got so excited because I had never seen one and wanted a "snake" plant. I have seen the ones with white blotches on the foliage. I want one of those.

Believe it or not, I am one of those few people on earth that has never bought anything on ebay. Don't know how. All this is still new to me. Just learned how to email a few years ago ! I am almost scared to learn how to use ebay. I am retired and I am afraid it will be too easy to want to order things I can't afford :-)

AuntB - Typhonium Venosum, is that the same as sauromatum Venosum?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Great question, I bought mine at the Wichita garden show for $1 a piece, there was a sign that said "voodoo lilies" So it was a fun purchase to see what I bought, for just a buck (actually I bought 3). I inquired about its identity this spring and was told it was Typh. But, after researching both (not spending too much time) I found the only difference can see are Sauromatum has lighter leaves and stem spot color... it could just be the pictures I'm not sure maybe someone can help us. I just noticed in one of my pics, there is definate stem color difference, maybe I have both? HELP! It doesn't matter too much to me, I like it (them), whatever it is. Here is mine earlier this year..

that looks very similar to the second photo I posted ! I don't know them apart either, that is why I wanted an informative website - one you don't have to pay to "join". Also one we "beginners" can understand.

I ,too, am interested in the voodo lilies- that is what I am calling "snake plants" because of the spotted stalks. I told ya'll I didn't know the correct names for them !

Maybe we should start a new thread... Venosum- Typhonium/Sauromatum ? Now I'm curious.... course, there is the aroid society thing going on in FL, but maybe someone who knows didn't go.

I purchased mine online. This is my first 'voodoo lily'. I was suprised at the size of the plant, the stems were about 18 inches long. I was also dissapointed because it was supposed to be a tuber. I wanted to see it flower. I need to find out how long the growing season usually is so that the tuber grows large enough to support flowering after its dormancy.

I am just starting my Aroid collection. I hope to have some pics to share soon.

The book I have on aroids says nothing about Typhonium and Sauromatum Venosum being synonomous.
