wood for raised beds

Wilsonville, OR(Zone 8b)

Hi,

I am building raised beds (square foot gardening style).
This is my first time using wood for the raised beds. Will it be OK using Doug Fir instead of cedar? I am making one of cedar but it is so expensive compared to the Doug Fir, I don't know that the price difference will really be worth it.

How long can I expect the beds to last, any ideas on how much longer cedar might last compared to the Doug Fir? I am using 2X10 boards, untreated wood.

Thanks!

I used construction pine, 2 x 8 boards, 8 foot long. I built the raised beds last spring and have grown 2 years of various veggie crops in them. No sign of rot yet. One thing I did that you may want to consider is that I lined the inside with 6 mil poly plastic. I bought it in a big roll at the hardware store. I hoped that would help protect the wood for longer and maybe it is helping. Hard to say for sure because I didn't build one without the plastic.

I've always used high-grade redwood for my raised beds. We have adobe clay soil, and it's usually always damp when you dig down a little. The redwood beds last at least 10 years in my experience. They did better than the treated wood ones my grandfather built for flowers, which only got about 6 years until visible signs of rot.

I used 2x12 by 8 foot long boards, braced with 2x2 posts every 4 feet.
