Yesterday afternoon I placed a Hummingbird feeder next to my front porch near the Red Hibiscus. I explained to my imaginative 5 year old, Andrew, we were trying to get Hummingbirds to our garden.
This morning Andrew went to wait on the porch for our walk to Kindergarden. A second later he ran in, bursting with excitement, yelling "There is a Hummingbird out there, a Hummingbird, a Hummingbird". Though I did not see it, I did not squash his enthusiasm, but I will admit I had a bit of doubt. Especially since it was just Sunday I planted a few scarlet sage near the Hibiscus and the day before that hung the feeder.
As we walked to school he rattled off Hummingbird facts. I mentioned to the teacher he "had a hummingbird encounter" so he might be talking about hummingbirds. She related they had read a book Hummingbirds just yesterday.
I left school and thought nothing of it. As I approached our driveway I noticed something out of the corner of my eye dart across the yard. I paused and sure enough it darted back toward the feeder. Then a second one. I was in awe. How beautiful a sight. It hovered then perched on top of the feeder. Throughout the day they were back and forth periodically.
The garden and feeder are directly outside Andrew's bedroom window, so late this Afternoon we watched them from inside the house about two feet away from the feeder. He left the blinds open so he can wake up in the morning and watch them while lying in bed.
We had our first Hummer this morning.
Wonderful story...thanks for sharing!

That is so sweet! What a wonderful way to send him off to kindergarten with an exciting new story to tell.
