Can we talk Variegated?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Maya is turning into my personal favorite.. thus far. I bought this plant at a local nursery in spring of 05. It gave me 3 flushes last summer and even bloomed in January in my basement. The 4 or 5 blooms were pale in color and still gave a faint scent at night. On May 31st this year It was the first one to bloom and is now on its 4th or 5th flush... It is the smallest of my adult brugs and I'm just loving it.
There is also Peaches and Cream, I don't have and there are more variegated foliage ones I think, maybe a pink blooming one also....

Wow!! That is like a pyramid brug! Absolutely stunning... I'm drooling.. I love Maya sooooo much. Congratulations on a beautiful flush and thank you for sharing!

OH MY, I heard MAYA was hard to grow, I had one but lost it, this one is terrific

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Someone said you can't start it from cuttings...? When they cut a limb off, the mother plant died.... Now I'm scared to trim her back for winter....shouldn't be though, I think I trimmed her up a bit and took the leaves off last fall.... Doris, what happened with yours? We did get some rain during the flush in the pic, and the blooms were almost touching the deck from the weight.... that scared me a little, too. Thanks you guys, I didn't think about it looking like a pyramid, but you're right, ZZ.

That's absolutely gorgeous!

A very lovely variegated brug..its one of my favorites and Ive never trimmed mine and also heard they are hard to take cuttings off...and I think Maya is the easiest of the variegated brugs...now dont even ask me about P and C....or snowbanks..they just dont do well for me....Judy

I've heard Snowbanks is a hard one to bloom, I believe Gordonhawk has or used to have one. Thanks Ilily. My aunt tried a peaches and cream but it didn't last a season.... was her 1st brug. That was back when I didn't know anything about them. So we have:
Maya
Peaches & Cream
Snowbanks

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Talk about a fat and sassy brug. That is stunning AuntB!

I bought mine as P & C but it was IDed on here as Maya mainly because of its agressive nature. I trim mine all the time and it does fine so do not worry. It roots well too. Every spring I trim it way back and do a root pruning too.

P & C is supposed to be the tough one. Finicky and unhappy a lot.

Recently I saw a huge tree of Snowbanks here so I think it may like it cooler.

Thanks, Kell. I spoil all my loved ones! lol I got it for $8, so I figured hey, I'll get $8 of enjoyment and education, even if it doesn't last the season... I might just try rooting it..

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

P and C is very slow growing in my yard..I never have had it bloom and bringing it out this spring it still had 2 stalks...well in a matter of s month, the stalks started to brown and do the slow die...it did get another stalk pop up the middle so thats what im dealing with now..there will be no blooms again....the snowbank?..well we dont have hot temps here usually and Ive had this one for2 years and it will start to grow some very ncie leaves and the bottom ones start to brown and fall off...I have a tiny little bud coming and of course I dont see having enough time to get it to bloom...Judy

Wow that is georgeous!! What do you all have in your water there in Ks? (marie jealous of all you brug people. I have not managed to keep on alive yet!!)

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

How many have you tried, Marie? Any ones in particular? I put 20-20-20 in my brug water... :)

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

AuntB,

Your Maya is stunning . She is my fav brug .

Of course you can start cuttings from your mother plant.

They are all descended from the one and only first Maya by cuttings.

Kare.. My Maya looks like that but I don't know what the other's look like

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

Kareoke, it looks like my maya...the P and C seems to be a little darker green with the variegation.....Judy

Aunt B, Just beautiful. What size of pot do you have?

What do you and Kereoke do with them in the winter? We have similar climates and I plan on bringing my 3 plants inside since I don't have a greenhouse. They aren't big enough to take cuttings yet. Any advise?

Marie

Thanks Marie, it's in a 25gal tub w/ cord handles, I get them at Dollar General, or I think Lowes and Home depot have them. I strip them of leaves and cut the tops back as little as possible and store them in my basement. Water very sparingly, (I watered them on the holidays, to help me remember when I water) sometimes they die back to the dirt level, but they come back from the roots. I have experimented with different techniques. Last year I kept them barely alive, by giving them a little more water than just the holidays, but then theres a chance to overwater and rot the roots. I was able to get blooms a little sooner in spring that way. Oh, there is light from a small south window where I keep them but I've kept them in the dark and they still came back.

Bessemer City, NC(Zone 7b)

That Maya is just fabulous!

[APPLAUSE]

Thanks for sharing the pix and for the info on your winter care.

Robert.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

(Bonnie bowing, proudly) Thank You Robert. I think they are foregiving plants, they will come back and thrive in spring, just so the rootball doesn't freeze. My mission is to get blooms sooner!
