I have two plain old goldfish in my hot tub pond along with a bunch of tadpoles. So far I haven't fed them. Do I need to give them fish food? Or what do they eat? And how do I know if there is enough in there for them -- I'd hate to starve the poor guys! -- Vicky
Question on feeding fish
Hi VCB1 I have had gold fish in the house and out for fifteen years. The outside ones I feed every other day about half a palm full of pellets but I have about 16 fish right now. I only feed April through Oct. I put a stock heater in for the winter and next Spring they are fine, Itwill not take very much for your two. Over feeding turns the water sour and kills them. It is better to uunder feed. Bev
I was told that fish can survive with whatever algae that is present in the pond.
I agree with Dinu, I have very seldom fed my fish and they do just fine. I do not have any Koi just goldfish. I have a couple that are about two years old and about 8" long that are doing fine. There are all kinds of little critters in there that they eat.
Well my two guys look quite fine so I assume they're eating something. Thanks everyone! I'm thinking of adding a couple more -- I like seeing them in there!

hi Dinu I was glad tonhear that algea won't bother my fish. I kept the algea down all summer
with Barley pellets. they really work but I guess I need to put in more but I' too cheap to use
them now. I wondered if the fish would be OK going into winter with all that algea. The racoons are vey active ..eating the water hyacinth but they can't find the fish with all the algea. We put bungie cords on the garbage can and it only took one night for them to figure
them out.I use apond heater to winter them. We get a lot of snow here and there is just a
depresion in the snow over the heater. I put a plastic pipe in to vent the gases from the water
over the winter. This spring the coons ate my two bigest fish before there was any cover for them. the joys of living with wild life. They are so bold Ihave to go out ond shout at them when
I hear them in the garbage. We live trapped a few this spring but it seemed a neverending job
to transport them to a happier place across the river.

Well my fish have grown quite a bit since I put them in so they must be eating -- and I'm not feeding them! So there is stuff in my "pond" that they're eating obviously. I just added 3 more goldfish. I have algae but I'm not adding chemicals or anything. I am going to add some more plants to try to keep it down. The fish seem to eat it -- at least they pick at it a lot. It looks like they might be eating it.
I don't need a heater thank goodness. My problem will be trying to make sure it stays cool in the summer!! We do have racoons here but so far they seem to have stayed out of my hot tub pond. I hope they stay out!!
