Here's the Sinningia pusilla you so generously shared with me! I couldn't be more thrilled with it! Thank you so much!!
First of all, does it look alright to you? Secondly, how do I get it to produce seeds? I don't think I have anything small enough to hand pollinate those blossoms. LOL I've read that they self seed prolifically, but does it need any help? I'd love to have a whole colony of these little guys!
Isn't it adorable? I love it!
Hey Keyring...Sinningia pusilla
Woohoooo! Amy, that is a perfectly stunning plant, and I love its terrarium!
Great growing, there!!
Thanks, Jill! I'm completely in awe of it! My kids make fun of me staring at it. They wouldn't have it because it's so small, but that's what I LOVE about it! Teeny, tiny little thing just blooming to beat the band! LOL If it happens to set seed and grow more for me, I'll send one to you. :o)
The terrarium is a wine glass that belonged to my husband's grandparents. We don't drink wine, so they've sat in the cabinet for years. I have either 4 or 6 of them. Seems that I need a few more small plants to pot up in them! LOL
good growing!
they usually decide to spontaneously selfpollinate (in other words, no human or bug help needed). I find that the first blooms after repotting usually do not set seed, but after a while it becomes steady. Also, I think humidity has to be relatively constant for the seeds to develop, so you might need to start watering by dribbling so that you don't need to keep the lid off.
cute, aren't they? I love the micro minis.
It's so cute.I love it.
How do you keep that glass so clean? It really is a pretty container for a very pretty plant.
TFS!
Joanne
WOW Amy adorable. I love you display accents your stunning plant. WOW just so cute well grown love it !
Amy that is beautiful! tell us everything!
Key, I covered it back up yesterday, so I'll just water a few drops at a time from now on. Thank you for telling me that. I'm going to still keep my fingers crossed that it will set seed, but won't be disappointed if it doesn't. How often do they usually bloom? I love the micro minis!
LOL Joanne, you noticed that the glass is clean, and all I could see is how dirty my blinds are! I wiped it down after I potted the Siningia in it and only pick it up by the stem. That's all I can figure, cause I sure don't put a lot of effort into cleaning (refer back to the blinds!)
Thank you Jan, Allison, and April! I was terrified of the little thing when I got it. It is so small, I just knew I'd kill it, but once I got brave enough to repot it in that glass, it took off growing like crazy! I've been shocked at how easy it is to grow! So, of course, I had to go see how many other micro mini Sinns there are, and now my wish list is that much longer! LOL
Key so generously sent me several other things...Episcia 'Kee Wee', Episcia 'Silver Skies', Sinningia cardinalis, Episcia 'Strawberry Patch'. Key, if I forgot something, please forgive me.
Here's a picture of E. 'Strawberry Patch' and Sinningia cardinalis. The two other E.s are in my terrarium and I don't have a picture of those handy.
Oh Amy wonderful plants in your terrarium ! Their fun to grow aren't they ! I never had a terrarium yours are so pretty !
Here's my terrarium. It's not landscaped at all. I was going to make hills and valleys, and steal some decorative items from my aquarium, but I decided if I went to all that trouble, everything would die. So I set them in it and have been watching to see how everything does. I've added a few extra cuttings and such to root, so it's overcrowded at this point, but once I'm convinced I'm providing the correct environment, I'll landscape and fix it up nice.
Here's a top view...
Very Nice Amy! I have an unused terrarium since the kids have long since left home.Need to get it down and see what I can come up with. You gave me some "Good Idea's" : ) Nancy
Thank you, Nancy, but it's not fixed up pretty like I'd like for it to be. It's very utilitarian right now, and that's not the end result I want. That Begonia was the determining factor for me, as far as growing conditions go. I love them but have the hardest time keeping them happy. It seems to be doing quite well and is growing, so I must be doing something right. I'll probably redo the whole thing in the next week or two and, hopefully, it will be much more pleasing to the eye then.
We have a 29 gallon aquarium that I want to make into a terrarium, but my husband keeps waffling back and forth about whether he'd rather it be an aquarium or terrarium. A couple weeks ago he said terrarium, but day before yesterday he changed to aquarium. Guess I'll wait till he sways back to terrarium and jump on it! LOL
I'm hoping my son will relenquish his 10 gallon aquarium to me. It has a hood and light and would fit on my computer desk where I can enjoy it. I may have to bribe him, though... LOL
I was just thinking about terrariums... I know most AVs may find them too humid, but I have a couple varieties ('Midget Gumdrop' & 'Winnie the Pooh' -- both are in your box, Amy) that sucker continually on me... I grew out the latest round of suckers in a plastic salad container with a few holes in the lid, and they really seemed to respond well to the extra humidity, getting fairly big without suckering! So they might be excellent candidates to try in your terrarium -- and if they fail, I can sure send you another (did I mention the suckering?) -- LOL!
Oh boy! My son said yesterday I can have his 10 gallon tank, so I'm going to move the old printer we never use and set it up here on my computer desk. I'll put 'Midget Gumdrop' and 'Winnie the Pooh' in there and see how they do! I've got an 'Angel Tears Trail' and 'Rob's Toorooka' in the terrarium pictured above. They're pretty small, and I thought the extra humidity and warmth might do them some good. So far, they seem to be doing quite well. ATT has put out a couple new leaves since being in there, too. I'm hoping the 10 gallon will be big enough for me to fit some of my Episcias in it, too, as I don't think they'll survive the winter in my cool, dry house if they're not in some kind of terrarium.
Hubby decided fish is the way to go in the 29 gallon, soooo....who knows what kind of plants will grow in an actual aquarium?? LOL I'll get plants in it one way or another! ;o)
