Split tomatoes

Shelton, WA(Zone 8a)

Okay -- what causes it? Some of mine have split on the top, some on the bottom, and some are just fine. This is only happening on my regular tomato plant, not on the cherry tomatoes.

I was told that was due to uneven watering (letting them dry and then watering) when it happened to me. We'll see what input others have.

That would make sense in this case. I planted them on the south side of the house where it was a little difficult to get water to them. Then we had the hottest, driest summer on record! My husband is eating them anyway, as long as they haven't started to rot due to the splitting. :-)

It didn't seem to affect the flavor when it happened to me. Just eat fast and a lot! LOL

I agree with KATY re: eat. Several of mine have split, and I just cut out the split and use the rest. Not sure why they split :(

I agree with Katy. Watering (too much or too little) is usually the culpret. Mine are splitting too.

Katy is spot on - & please, eat them! taste is not affected unless it starts to mold...

Some of mine have splits too. Even w/splits they are still quite tasty.

Mine split after this rain, too much water. I now have them covered in plastic hoping they will ripen.

I'm looking at lots of fried green tomatoes. Hope my husband likes those as much as ripe tomatoes.

Do you have a good recipe for fried green tomatoes to share?

I was going to try one of the ones in the DG cookbook -- the second one in the list. It sounds something like my mom used to make. I don't eat them myself, so I'll just have to try things out until I find one my DH likes.
