duck weed

Livermore, CA

I have an overgrowth of duckweed which must have arrived on a plant from somewhere. It looked kind of nice for the first 3 -4 weeks, now it is covering every square inch. I fish it out with a net and compost it, but it does seem to be interferring with the water lilly blooming. any suggestions?

I was just looking for the same answer, mine came in from a plant trade and no matter how much I take out with the net, it never seems to make a dent in the amount and is just covering the pond.

Isn't that stuff just awful. They have a spray that wildlife & fisheries uses here but I don't know the name of it. It's safe for fish. They spray it in the rivers around here. I'm sure if you go to any hardware they could tell you.

Thanks jeri11, I will ask at a pond supply place perhaps.

Me, I'm just dipping and thinking it'll make good compost. Hate to kill the fish while trying to eradicate the duck weed. It does have a kind of lacey appearl and keeps the water clear.

Anyone else have any solutions?

I'm sorry I didn't make myself clear. The Wildlife & Fisheries would never do anything that would harm the fish. Whatever it is ...IT IS SAFE. We get duckweed in the rivers and lakes around here. It is so nasty looking it discourages anyone from wanting the swim or water ski.
