Can daffodils and tulips be planted along with Hostas

Pueblo, CO(Zone 5b)

Can daffodils and tulips be planted along with hostas in the same bed? I ordered way too many daffodils and Im thinking that the hosta bed might be a good place for them. Except it gets a lot of water and I dont want my bulbs to rot. Any help would be appreciated.

As long as the drainage is OK, they should be fine, but why would the Hosta bed get so much water?

Are your hostas in sun or shade? Tulips and daffs need lots of sun don't they?

Daffodils are more tolerant of moisture than tulips and work well in the shade of deciduous trees (they get the sun they need before the trees leaf out). A lot of my hostas are late to emerge in spring, so I like to plant daffs and other spring bulbs around them.

I put lots of daffodils and a few tulips around my hostas. All of my hosta gardens are under Silver Maples, and they do provide tons of black shade in summer. But springtime is perfect back there for daffodils and tulips. None of the trees have leafed out yet and the hostas have not started to really put forth new growth either, so the daffs and tulips have the place to themselves. It's really great to see some color showing up in that area early in the spring!

As for the water issue, many of my bulbs get quite wet for a variety of reasons. I even have some planted near a gutter end (I don't know the proper name for the place where the gutter water dumps out at ground level) and they appear not to mind the extra water in the least.

Bleek,

The hosta beds get watered frequently during the spring, summer, and fall. But not during the winter.

Everyone thanks for all your help. Im going to plant some of the daffodils in the hosta bed and see how it turns out

Hi, Lilly--

I found this article helpful when I was trying to figure out which hostas and bulbs would make good combinations.

There are some late yellow daffodils that make especially nice combinations with gold edged hostas just emerging from dormancy. And ;likewise white daffs with white edged hostas.
