Hello

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

New to the hoya forum and wanted to into myself. My name is Jan and I live in AL.Though I don't have any hoyas yet I have read and learned alot.I feel pretty confident that I can grow one..Now when my pocketbook can afford it I will get one.lol

Welcome the Dave's Hoya Forum Jan!! Glad to have another hoya lover in our midst, even if you only love them from afar. This forum is filled with friendly and helpful enablers and you'll find its not as expensive to collect them at all.

Growing hoyas is much like growing any other tropical indoors. Learn about how they grow and what they need and you have it made!!!

Every once in a while cuttings come a'offering...so stay tuned.

Hi Jan. You can find quite a few of the more common Hoyas at your local HD or Lowes, Walmart, sometimes (I've heard) even K-Mart and Target (though we never see any here...) It's a cheap way to get started - you can get a mature plant for $10-$15. I have quite a few of the Exotic Angel plants and they always seem healthy and grow well, as long as you catch them before the box store "death squad" gets to them to over or under water...

Hi Denise,
Home depot would be great to get But the closest one to me is 75 miles away, that why I said* when my pocketbook could afford it*.lol.It takes a tank full of gas in my old clunker to get there. We do have a small Wally world but I have never seen a hoya there.Thats the bab part about living in the country.I miss city life.LOL.

Jan, with the price of gas what it is, I'd say you are probably better off ordering a few and just paying the shipping. Then you get them delivered right to your door and it is just like Christmas. Ha.
Beside, then you know what your getting, and can order ones you will NEVER see in any store.

Marcy's right. I get most of mine mail order these days just because it's unusual for me to find one I don't already have at the box stores. (Once in awhile, I get lucky, so I'm constantly checking!)

Well, I HAVE all the big box stores (Home Depot, Lowes, Walmarts, and Targets) all over the place, and I STILL can't find any hoyas in them other than an occational carnosa or compacta. Even my local nurserys only get a few of the most common ones. I found to get any rare ones, I must either order them, or make a trip down to Kartuz's nursery. Then we still spend a fair amount on gas that would have paid shipping costs. So ordering is the way to go unless the stores you're close to even have a clue about what a hoya IS. Ha Ha
Oh....wouldn't it be fun to have those little hoya vendor stands set up at plant things like they do in Sweden?

WM might surprise you one day...just keep checking.
I've also found a hoya or two in 2-3" pots tucked amongst the other plants at many grocery stores......just keep on the lookout--you might luck out!
