So guess what? My new roo attacked my head hen and really hurt her! He must have been asserting dominance, right? He ripped all of the feathers off of her head, and pecked her .She was bleeding from several spots, but it seems to be all surface stuff. One of her eyes was swollen basically shut, but it is fine now.
So I'm bummed out, but I also want to know how to care for her wounds. They aren't deep. I kept her in all morning, and now that they have congealed, I am letting her run around outside. She seems to be back in good spirits, but is pretty ugly! How should I care for them? Should I just leave her alone?
Totally and utterly bummed out
Sorry, that stinks. I hope he's back with the neighbors for good now. And hopefully leaflady will check in here; I believe she could patch up just about any domestic animal.
Oh Man! Hate to hear that about the Roo! Sounds like he is a young, unexperienced newbie to his duties! they tend to get a little overzealous ! Send Him packing!!!!
Your Hen should be fine, since the bleeding stopped! But it wouldn't hurt to put a little neosporin on her Booboo's! Her Feather will return,But it is almost moulting season so they will take a little longer to fill in!
Thanks! Her head is all dirty, since I put a little un-petroleum jelly on it ( natural vasoline)and she got dirt all over it. Should I clean it off? It is acting as camo. right now, and the other girls don't seem to have noticed that she is injured ( whew!) If I did I could put some neosporin on it. What do you guys think?
I use that oinment on my chicken's eyes around the outside part...it helps the healing part...
There's a neosporin otic for use in the eyes -- might be better if there's a chance she'll get it in her eyes, but I think you have to get it from a vet. But I think protecting it with the un-petroleum jelly was probably enough. Just keep an eye on her. You might irritate it more by fussing with it.
Well, this proves it. ALL men are pigs. ;)
rotflmao
They are......
I use an ointment I got at the feed store....name escapes me
Its florescent greenish yellow
Furzone or something.....looks like Vaseline
Thanks guys!
He keeps coming back to chase her around. The other girls aren't any help at all, they keep fraternizing with the enemy! :)
He could well kill her if this continues. Didn't you say the neighbor was willing to get rid of him if this was a problem? Hope they do the right thing, and soon. She'll be a target from now on.
Yeah, I have my girls penned in. I will touch base with them this weekend and see if there has been any progress. He is patroling the fence sometimes, trying to figure out how to get in. ( Hasn't figured out he can fly over yet! thankfully)
She seems fine. She is still maintaing the pecking order in the coop and laying eggs. Now she's just bald. I keep a close eye on him, though.
