cutting help

Whittier, CA(Zone 10a)

Hello, I'm new here. Two weeks ago I received a 30" cutting, unknown white, which I let dry and potted up in 2/3 perlite, 1/3 peat. I have kept the moisture between 4-6 and it is in full sun on concrete. Today I noticed the south-facing sides of the cutting are getting paler green, nearing yellow. Should I move it to some afternoon shade? I am in Whittier, CA sunset zone 23 and it's been really hot lately. Thanks everyone-
Carol

Carol, I'm in the midwest, but I still keep my cuttings half shaded till they get established.Oh and Welcome onboard.. :-)

Ya sounds like sunburn
you could cover the cutting with a small towel
but leave it in the sun so the soil and pot gets hot

(Zone 11)

Carol, I have used wide masking tape to protect areas on the stem that were starting to get sunburned, it stops the burn while still allowing full sun exposure...

Good luck,
Dave

Hi Carol and Welcome! It's been so hot here lately, but things are going to start cooling off soon. Make sure you check out the FAQ's sticky thread on starting cuttings. Bottom heat is essential to the rooting process. A soil temp of 80 degrees or higher is preferable, but if your cutting is getting dehydrated, you will want to mist more frequently and move the pot into part sun or filtered sun if necessary. In this heat, it is important to not be stingy with the water. I water my cuttings every day in this weather, and I mist them too when I am watering. We are in a very dry climate and don't have the humidity that other areas do so the worry during this season is for desiccation and not rot. We worry about rot next season. It is important that the soil in which your cutting is rooting does not dry out.
