Hi everyone....!!!
Remember me? I asked about changing the potting soil about 2 weeks ago. I was worried that it'll die, but it's still here, looking a bit more robust...LOL.
Many many thanks for all your helpful tips!
So far this is still my one and only AV. I am planning to give it a buddy as soon as I can find one locally again :o)
Was thinking about purchasing some online, but then I'm still at "trial & error" stage for AV, so I think I'll just stick to the cheapie, NOID AV in the local stores, just in case I kill it, I won't feel so awful. I think they still look cute eventhough un-named and all....
Oh, and it even has a small flower bud, still very tiny, my camera's not good of taking macro picture. But I see it there. So, I will post more pic when it actually blooms.
Another quick question for those who use self-watering pots, how do you fertilize? Drop some to the water reservoir or directly to the soil?
Thanks again!
It's still alive....!!!
That's wonderful to see! Congrats, we knew you could do it!
As far as the Av pots...I usually mix a gallon bottle of water & 1/8 tsp of fertilizer and add that mix to the watering pot.
Now I use a potting mix that has a small amount of fertilizer in it already so I have to be careful or I will over fertilize mine. If you know for sure you soil mix has NO fertilizer in it, then you can up your mix to 1/4 tsp per gallon of water.
One thing to remember with the self watering pots is to water them from the top every once in a while & drain the excess water off the side...that will help protect the roots from fertilizer build up. I do this and let the pot sit with out any water for a day or two, just so it doesn't get water logged.
After a lil trial & error, you will get the hang of growing them in your conditions .
Glad to see you back,
MsC
Thanks MsC!
I put a drop of superthrive in the water reservoir, is this too much?
So glad that this one made it. I thought 2 weeks is a good enough time to post an update that this AV is content and not dying...LOL....

That plant sure looks happy! Whatever you are doing, the plant likes it. Looks like you are about ready for MORE ~lol~
I AM READY FOR MORE!!! :o)
But suddenly all the stores and nurseries don't have them anymore. I regret not getting a few more at HD last month when I got this one. They were on sale for only $1.99 each. Are they really hard to find in regular stores, or maybe they're seasonal or something?
BK,
You might want to empty the water with the SuperThrive since it has had a nice big drink of it. It's great for somethings short term, but it's not a fertilizer, it's more like a vitamin elixir.
Some folks have had the experience of it making AV's leaves brittle and bunchie in the middle. It is great for occasional use, like when you repot or pot up babies or sickish plants.
I'd go ahead an give it a very weak fertilizer solution. So far it looks great & you did a great job!
As far as Av's are concerned they are kinda seasonal. You can check Home Depots & even Wal Marts they have them at times.
The folks on the forums are very generous & when fall trades start I'm sure we can all fix you up with babies.
MsC
Great growing !
Thanks Violet_Treasure & MsC...!
I emptied the water with superthrive and change with regular water. Thanks for the heads up!
These are the fertilizer I have on hand: Miracle Gro Bloom Buster & All Purpose (water soluble ones), and Liquid Sea Kelp (Seaweed?).
Are any of these good for the AV, just for now, at least, since my shopping list isn't long enough, so I don't think I'll be going to the store soon....
