I've tried & tried to grow a few things from seed without much luck.
Finally got these lil guys to germinate!
1st pic
Gesneria Cunefolia seedlings
I've also tried my hand at the streps, too. I'm thrilled that these cuttings took...
So what have you tired lately???
MsC
Small Successes...
Wonderful! Congrats!
I'm ashamed to admit that my remaining seeds from Keyring are still in the fridge... one of several projects from last winter that got postponed until (hopefully) this fall. I sure hope they are still viable! *fingers crossed*
wunderfull!!!!!!!
I'd say you have the hang of the seed thing now :-)
Streps are looking good too!
seedlings of micro mini sinningia's are usually easy to grow & germinate pretty fast.almost always have some seedlings growing of micro's & mini's.
Awsome MsC ! Congratulations ! Fun great growing :)) Maybe after we move and now I don't have to care for plants..maybe I'll try just a few seeds ! I love growing Streps by leaves it's fun I can ignore them and they are fun !
Thanks everyone!
I'm just tickled about it...I used a lil plastic box with a lid to get the seeds up...I can't wait to see if they make it to adulthood..lol
Key, Since I've mananged with these can you recommend any others from the Gessie seed list from the AGGS list???
MsBonnie~I do have some mini sinningia seeds to try & will be giving them a shot soon...soon as I can find a spot to put them...lol
I just love sinnigias and plan on making a shelf just for those lil guys.
Good to see you posting Ali.
MsC
Very cool MsC..Congrats. I tryed the seed thing but didn't get any to grow.
Ah, yes .. .the seeds thing scared me to death, after drowning most of what I plant ,but with age I guess we do get a lil experience.
CritterO I do know what you mean, mine just sat there calling out to me PLANT ME!!! lol
I'm such a chicken sometimes.:)
My next victim will be sinningia's & a cutting of Kohleria...that should prove interesting for laughs.
MsC
Same here.No seeds ever even sprouted for me.Can't figure out what I am doing wrong. That is really neat MsC!!
Hiya cedarnest,
Well, I'm still not sure what I do wrong or right but this time I used a small plastic box with the lid attached,(so I wouldn't forget to put it back on.:)
Then I used my favorite mix of long fiber spaghnum moss chopped up with seed mix & perlite. I wet the mix closed the box & waited a day.
Then I drained any excess water off...sprinkled the seeds and closed the lid. I placed it up under my lights really close and left them alone...a really hard thing for me.:)
Now these lil seeds are supposed to be a sinch to grow and are for my terrariums I'm planning. I had great luck so now I'm feeling brave & will try something else.
Wish me luck!
MsC
Good luck with your babies MsC!
Where is the best place to buy some seed? I'm determinded to grow these plants.LOL.
MsC,
How did you chop up your long fibered moss? I wanted to try to chop mine and all I could think of was to use the food processor. Good luck on your seedlings!
Snow,
I'm afraid I'm not very sophisticated, I just used a common pair of scissors.lol
I wet the sp. moss slightly in a large bowl and then cut it up with the scissors. It works well for me, but if you try the processor then you may have better luck with it dry.
jannich, If you join the AGGS they have a seed fund available to all members and a lot more reasonable than ebay..lol
Sometimes Keyring has some so you might check there.
MsC
Thanks MsC, I will try it chopping my own. I haven't seen it sold anywhere so far already chopped.
There's a brand of chopped sphag called Supersphag. Here's one source: http://camponeorchids.com/supersphag.html . Not sure if anyone else sells something similar. Chopping works, as does a dedicated food processor. (well, ok, some people mix their plant and food prep equipment....)
AGGS (now the Gesneriad Society) is certainly a good source of seeds, as well as the related Gesneriad Hybridizer's Association. Note, though, that odd hybrids sometimes won't germinate, and some of AGGS's seed stock is old. Another source of some gessie seeds is Chiltern's seeds in the UK. Also some AV/gessie vendors have some seeds (I think Rob's has streps and someone else has AV seeds). And certainly you can pollinate your own plants too. Finally, as MsC said, I usually have seeds lying around, and so can easily spare a dozen or so of something.
Just wanted to say, MsC, how great the food processor did on the long fibered moss. I just put it in dry and in seconds it was chopped just perfect. Now I have it stored in a 1 gallon zip lock bag and is ready to go. Easy as 1-2-3!
PS: Wait a little before removing the processor lid as there is a slight cloud of dust if you open immediately.
Thanks for the link, Keyring!
Great link Key...it's a shame there's no pics, for those of us who are botanically challenged.:) Guess I'll do some learning along the way.
So can you give us any tips for pollinating some of these lil gessies??
Snowrose,
Glad to know about the food processor working so well...now I'll just pic one up at the dollar store for the plant side of the kitchen.
Wonder if a light misting through the top of the processor might settle the dust???
