Hedychium
Hedychium ellipticum

Taken 26th July 05. It's first year from a bare rhizome with one stem which had a flower on late in the season and rotted when half open after a cold, damp spell.

Double fancy, those red edges get me.

Me too, but it isn't supposed to like too much heat.

It grows in the Eastern Himalayas on shady mud slopes, this does well in the greenhouse which gets a lot of shade but next year I will put some in the ground, it's supposed to be hardy.

It's late to grow anyway and goes dormant in the winter, the stem completely drops off.

Many Hedychiums here are said to flower only if kept in growth, even if they will survive in the ground they generally don't get to flower. With this one going dormant naturally I may stand a chance of it flowering in the ground, but can keep some in a pot as insurance.

Ah, the advantages of knowing where your plants live in nature.
I'm determined to bloom some kind of Hedychium outdoors here...

H forrestii is supposed to be hardyish, I have got one of those growing this year and it's getting tall but don't think it will flower this year. I don't know where that one comes from, now I will have to look.
