CHKDSK says volume dirty?

What causes this to happen on bootup? I started my machine (running XP) and twice my desktop would not load, and I had to reboot. The third time it went through this process automatically of CHKDESK and I got a message that NTFS was checking files and that volume was dirty. (I am paraphrasing it poorly here, it was a long message and I wrote down what I could). Everything seems fine now, but what caused this and how can I prevent it?
