I just had to share this with you folks..I got the seeds from a gal in S Carolina and they grew absolutelt fantastic..The main plant is about 3 feet tall or better and has 6 blooms on it just like this one..There is 2 large seed pods on it so I am hoping the frost will stay away until they mature.
Double Datura Flower
That is gorgeous, kinnika. I have some single purple and white Daturas, but none as lovely as that double. Very nice. Congrats!
Don
Wow, Dianne! Great shot - very pretty flower. Todd, not purple but still lovely.
why dont you plant them in buried pots. Then you can bring them in to finish the pods ripening - if necessary.
inanda
Next year I will be sure to plant at least one in a pot so I can get some seeds..I am new to these guys but I sure like them.Todd if I get some seeds I will swap you for some of the yellow ones as I like them too.
Wow to both. Now I KNOW I have to try Daturas.
Ann
These are just impossible. I've seen brugs but had absolutely no idea that there were such beautiful daturas. Doubles, colours, the yellow is glorious Todd. I wonder if it would be safe to grow some in a public garden when they are so poisonous. What is the collective opinion?
inanda - thinking of the Guerrilla Garden perennial bed.
My vote would be no. There has been some trouble in the Vic emergency with kids getting the seed pods and doing stupid things.
Inanda I am with Echoes on that one..Theses are poisonous and quite frankly that is why I have stayed away from them but now the Grandkiddies are all old enough so I thought I would give them and also Castor Beans a try..I am amazed but I actually have some seeds off of them this year also.
kinnika - how old are your grandkids? Mine are 4 yr old twins and I was beginning to think it might be safe to try growing some daturas.
Ann
viloaAnn-- My youngest just turned 5 this year and he makes sure that no one goes near "That Bad Flower" as he calls it..I also have Castor Beans and the kids know not to touch them either..What I did was plant it well to the center of a large flower bed so there are a lot of flowers to get to before you get to it..I have talked to a few horticulturists about it and even when I took the courses it was always said that a child would have to consiume a lot of it before it was in danger..Animals ,,now that is another story...cats especially are at risk as they don't have to consume very much before they are in trouble..I had mine in the sunroom and I have 4 cats so all I did was put it in a hanging plant holder and never had a problem at all...Next year I plan on have quite a few of them and hopefully in as many colours as possible..
We grow them (Datura and Castor Bean) at our local BG in the medicinal garden. They are labelled as poisonous (as is nearly everything in that garden!). However, so many garden plants are poisonous. Aconitum is deadly and a teenager locally died here 3 years ago from eating the leaves (he was old enough to have better sense but someone dared him and said it would give him a rush!). Aconitums are among the most popular plants in local gardens....and of course Digitalis. There are plenty of opportunities for children to eat poisonous plants....its a matter of keeping a close eye on them.
OK. No poisonous plants for me. Not even in home garden as we have a fair population of both feral and domestic cats. Wish they would stay inside though.
Thats it. Will have to drool over just pix of these amazing double daturas. Had the feeling that would be the concensus but..... This is the kind of moment that I would love to live in the country with NO outdoor animals.
Can't imagine what my life would be like if lilium were poisonous instead of being a food source (in some lands).
Laughing as was called a snob!!! today because wanted to change the word 'group' to 'organization' in a mission statement for a plant website.
Do snobs choose to live in the middle of an impovrished inner city area? hmmm.....
inanda
You are not giving cats much credit...they are generally not so stupid as to eat poisonous plants...in fact, most animals will avoid poisonous plants...people are the main 'animal' that may get poisoned by poisonous plants.
So true, Todd. I have numerous Datura and Brugmansia plants, and the most I get from my two dogs and two cats are a "sniff" and they are on their way! Even my 4 year old Grandson, who visited this summer, was too busy to even go near them. If he had touched them, I would have insisted that he wash up and all would have been fine.
Don
You're all right, and I would grow datura again too. I don't think little children are usually a problem with poisonous plants outside, especially in a supervised situation. Ginny wasn't going to plant them in that type of garden. It is not so much the little kids (accidental poisoning) that I was thinking of, although that could be a problem too, in her area, in a garden that isn't a part of her residence. The problems have been with teens abusing this as a drug. It can be very dangerous.

Kinnika - very nice!
Is that the Blackcurrant swirl datura? If so the Thompson and Morgan have the seeds, here is mine from the top and I think it is a triple.
Also we have dat's and brugs in our legislature ground gardens and they are not posted as dangerous. I find that weird as you would think the insurance dudes would stop this. Mine is being babysat in my neighbors yard and in a pot where her cat ignors it.
Ann
annabell I don't know the name as the seeds were given to me and just marked double purple and white but it sure looks like yours..I will write that name down so I don't forget it..Is that a special seed or did it just turn out triple..It is gorgeous.
Very nice, Annabell52.
Don
Now thats my kind of double Datura. Lovely Annabelle.
Really nice double/triple daturas :).......I grew one triple called Raspberry Swirl (I think......it had purple mixed in with the white) one year and it took my breath away (wished I had saved the seeds).
