Hibiscus 'Plum Crazy'

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Just got this in the summer. Luv the color and the size of the bloom! Does anyone else have it and does it survive well in your garden?

I tried my hand at starting some from seed and the one I kept did wonderfully through the summer, growing to about 7 feet high. I gave several away to friends and family as well. I am crossing my fingers that it will survive it's first winter, and have already purchased seeds of Red and Pink Hardy Hibiscus to try more. I loved the blossoms, so large...only wished they would last longer. I am going to spray it along with my roses with an antidesicant so it won't dry out over the winter.

Donna, Your blossom is gorgeous. Here is a photo of one of mine.

Thanks, Don! Do you remember what yours is called? I like the dark eye and the shape of the leaves.

hello Donna
Long time that we had a talk.
I do have some hardy hibiscus , i have sweet caroline moy grande, plum crazy , and 2 or 3 more , but i do not remember their names . they have the little tag stuck in the earth so the name is available . they all survived last winter with no special protection , they are all about 3 feet tall now and are just starting to flower , the flowers are really beautiful , one or two at the same time that is all , the plants are not bushy yet , it will take a few years to get larger . i should take some photos of them , especially that i'm starting my vacations .......... yep , next week i'll do so .

Bye Bye for now

No, I didn't ever get a name for my Hibiscus. Got the seeds in a Swap here on DG last year. Just "Pale Yellow Hibiscus".

I wonder if it's a Kenaf species.

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

I dunno, Donna. There a a bunch of seeds pods on the plant right now. I don't know exactly what to do with them, but I can try and collect some seeds for you if you like.

Don

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Sure I would luv to try some. If it's grown to 7 ft, I sure it's a Kenaf.
:) Donna

Donna, I love it. Sure hope it winters over for you. Have you taken any cuttings? Now why didn't I have my handy dandy little snippers with me when I visited? Maybe I could babysit some for you. Just in case it doesn't come back.

Don that is a lovely yellow one. Lucky you, you probably don't have to worry about it wintering.

I grew some Hibiscus manihot this year. If they ever make seeds I'll save them, but don't consider it nice enough to bring in for the winter.

Thanks, Brenda. Good idea....I should take some cuttings in case I lose it. Hope not! Your H. manihot is very pretty to. It almost looks like Don's.

Beautiful!! Are you growing this inside or outside for the winter?
:) Donna

Hello Donna
How are you , this hibiscus is growing outside , the other one that i have on photo is not quite open . i do have 5 different ones but some haven't had any flowers yet , i planted them last year , i have only one or two long stems that tend to fall because they are not big enought , next year they will be more solid . i brought in all my tropical plants . the nights were getting to cold and i didn't want to take a chance in loosing some . last year they were out until the end of september . it is a lot of work trimming , spraying some i repotted in smaller pots , now my plant room is full ,for the nest few weeks i will be cleaning up the falling leaves . I would like to mentionned that i received last week my second order fron Pike Lake greenhouses and i'm so impressed with the quality of the plants , the size of them is more them i was expecting and the packaging is so perfectly done . Tom is such a nice guy to deal with , he callled me to see if everything was o.k. and to know if i was happy with the order . I will be ordering from him again in the spring .
Next week is my second week of vacation and this one we will be staying more at home so i want to take photos and post them .
Bye bye for now Arlette

That's great that you got alot of wonderful plants there. I'm trying to bring in my plants, but I've had to think how I'm going to stuff more plants into the house than last year..lol. Arlette which product have you been using for the spraying?

Hi, everybody--

I found this thread (and some of my favorite DGers who have been hiding out in Canadian gardening, I think!!) by googling for 'plum crazy' hibiscus...so I hope you don't mind my post and hello!

I bought a 'Plum Crazy' this summer too and loved the unusual color and the way it blended so well with my other wine colored foliage in the garden so googled for some cultural info on it--

I found it it is a 'Fleming Brothers' hybrid and it's supposed to grow to about 4 feet (shorter than many). One of the University trial gardens gave it 3.5 on a scale of 5 which wasn't the best score...because blooms were somewhat sparse. Flowers are supposed to be about 7 inches big, which I like. They said it requires lots of nitrogen and water. I don't know if it needs winter protection...but I bet not. The Fleming Brothers are in Nebraska and it gets pretty harsh there in winter.

Does anyone know if hummingbirds like hibiscus? Just wondering....

I promise I won't interrupt again (but I love the Canadian gardening thread and Canadian gardeners, too!)

hello Donna
i use 2 sprays , first i use End-all and the next day i spray my plants with a dilution of neem oil , 10 ml for one liter of water it gives a beautiful shine to the leaves plus it is a good natural insecticide . i have in my plant room a automatic spray can wich sprays every 30 minutes . the name is Dispar-mist ll .
Last year i had those very anoying fungus gnats flying everywhere in the house , i got that products from my clinic and it got rid of them completely after only a few days . Now since i brought in all of my tropical plants in i'm using it for a few days again just in case i have some flying insects .
So that is what i have done with my plants Donna
Nice talking to you Arlette

I am posting this on all canadian sites. Does anyone know of a person who could (with pay) pick me up in Edmonton alberta and take me to the greyhound bus stop, and also keep my canoe for a few hours while I go to Rocky Mt House. I will then return to pick up canoe in late PM.
