bird story

Crozet, VA

During the storm on Friday my hubby and I were entertained by some of the birds that use our feeder. There was a little fuzzy ball of gray sitting on the front deck rail during some fierce winds and rains. I thought that he was certainly a brave little soul.

After he had been just sitting there for what seemed a long time, along came a female cardinal to aid him. Evidently the poor little fatty was hungry and was afraid to fly to feeder. I am certain that the female was his mommy because she began going to feeder and getting a mouth full of seed and bringing it back and feeding it to the smaller bird. This went on seven or eight times. One of the most amazing things I have ever seen. Please keep in mind that the rain and wind were plentiful.

After a bit, along came a male cardinal and the mom and baby flew away. Daddy bird picked the windiest time to eat. Hubby and I watched him ride the movable rod holding feeder for a long time. We were laughing out loud at the horriifying ride that he was taking, being battered back and forth, and back and forth.

I just wanted to share our sighting with those who can appreciate. The little bit of money that the feeders and the seeds cost, have rewarded us with many hours of entertainment.

Ruby,
What a great story...it's been said before....and I believe it whole heartedly...we could learn so much from our animal friends! Thanks for sharing with us!!

Ruby, I grow poppies (papaver somniferum) for the seed, which mixed with sugar syrup makes a wonderful pastry filling. This fall I will have to buy canned poppy seed. Goldfinches discovered the poppies this summer. I think this picture is from late June or early July. This clever guy found a convenient dill weed to perch on, but mostly they would fly in, land on the seedpod, and try to eat the seeds while the stalk swayed back and forth under their weight. It was so funny. I wish the pictures had turned out better.
