wind damage

Crozet, VA

Hi Everyone - Well, we finally got the much needed rain. Too bad that it was accompanied by fierce winds. So far, the flooding that was likely in our area has been avoided. Main problems seem to be downed trees and loss of power. So far, we only lost power for a bit over an hour last evening. I was certainly happy to see the power come back on. Only problem is that cable is out and that is how I connect to Internet. Well, I have a little trick that I use when the cable connection is down. I hook up through the telephone and AOL. It is slower, but at least I have a connection.

Haven't been outside to walk and survey damage but by looking out to front deck last evening I saw that a pole planter that holds eight small coconut baskets had blown over. I went out and put the small plants and most of the soil back in liners but didn't bother standing pole up again. I will take the red petunias, red salvia and miniature marigolds and plant in large pot.

When coming back in the door I looked down my steps at screen porch door and saw that my gigantic coleus pot had also toppled over and broken off a good size piece. I will also decide what to do to that pot today. The broken off piece came inside with me and is in a glass of water.

From my kitchen window I can see my veggie bed and see that one of the tall sunflowers has also fallen to the ground. I am not sure what I will find later today as I go out and look around at other beds. Oh yeah, I have a coleus that I started as seed last spring that has done very well this year. I saw the wind whipping that all around yesterday too. Hold a sec, gonna turn deck light on and see how it did through the night. BRB.

Well, the wind is still blowing but the poor plant is taking the beating quite well. It is still standing. I will definitely rescue it shortly and give it a nice indoor home.

I am going to ask a favor of you good folks for the next storm. Please ask me if I have made any preparation for the safety of my plants. I had a day or so warning that we were going to have this. I just went along my merry way and didn't even think of the poor plants having to go through this. I could have taken some precautions and possibly avoided some of the damage done. This has been a good lesson though.

I hope that the rest of you came away without too much damage. Things could have definitely been a lot worse. I hope that everyone will have a good weekend.

[_]D Sorry you had to wake up to garden disarray. I'm sure you coleus will spring back and you can start an other plant from what broke off. Hope you don't find any more damage!

We are only getting the rain from Ernesto this morning and maybe tomarrow too. So I guess that means house cleaning for me this weekend. Bummer!

I'm really impressed with you switching from cable to modum, and you let us beleive you knew nothing about computers! We'll just have to keep an eye on you. LOL

I hope everyone made it through the storm with little or no damage.

It wasn't bad in Maryland. Glad no one here has a disaster to report.
Murphy's Law of Trees in your Yard- The ones that break by weather are never the ones you want to break!
My nine-foot amaranth is now a five footer. The top snapped and is hanging there, so I think I'll let it dry that way..........
The rain was sure refreshing for the garden.

Thank you for the responses ladies. Sally, I totally agree about the rain being refreshing. It had certainlyy been a while since we had seen rain around here. Found a few more things damaged, but wouldn't trade them for the rain.

Chris, I have been using a pc since 1998. At one time I was able to do a lot of things that I don't even bother with now. For some reason I have a mental block about taking pics and trying to post here. I did think earlier today that I ought to at least go out while plants look about half decent and take pictures, but not stress myself about getting them posted. I thought that on the long wintery days when not many people are talking about gardening, they might like to see what I was able to do this year. So, another thing added to my "to do" list.

Luna, I am still having a good weekend thanks. Getting ready in a while to cook for hubby. He has taken my 16 year old son, who is named Tucker to a baseball game. Tucker is big time in to all sports, but is an excellent baseball player. I decided to stay home and cook.

I hope that everyone is enjoying their three day weekend too.

Ruby
