Overwintering non-hardy hibiscus

Bismarck, ND

This year I gave in to temptation and bought two hibiscus which are not hardy to winters in our zone. I plan to overwinter them inside, but need some advice. Would I be better off letting them go dormant and leaving them outside in the pots until the temperature is getting down to where they might be damaged and then just bringing them into the cold part of the garage or should I bring them in before frost and just keep them growing over the winter? I do have the space and grow lights, etc. to do this in my heated garage that doubles as my greenhouse if that would be better. Thanks for your help.

I have all of mine in pots. Bring them inside when chance of frost, keep them growing and blooming over the winter. Have some upstairs and some under florescent lights in basement. Temps do not go below 62 degrees all winter. Have to spray for bugs, mainly spidermites and whiteflies.

give them a pretty good trim to as they bloom on new wood

If they had a great summer, you will have to prune anyhow to get them back in the house. I have to do that with mine every fall.

Mine have been outside all summer and have grown quite tall. So I should trim them back - can the cuttings be rooted easily?? Mine did bloom all last winter under lights, but tended to be bug magnets!!!

When I trim them back- how far do you trim?

Buy Bayer's Tree and Shrub systemic and treat ALL your plants before you bring them indoors - no bugs for a year! For the spider mites, buy Neem LIGHT horticultural oil and follow the directions.

Thanks for the information. We are getting to the point where I have to start listening for frost warnings every evening, so I guess it's time to treat them and bring them in. I think I'll try to Bayer's Tree and Shrub. I use their rose solution and have had good luck. I have a lot of houseplants, so I don't want to bring any critters in. :)
