Has anyone ordered tags? I don't need but a few and don't want to order a whole batch. I was thinking maybe someone might have some extra or let me buy a few. I've only done this once and that year someone had extra tags that they just gave me. I never usually remember until it's too late.
I got this email from Journey North, although it says Journey South this time of year, that has some interesting ideas for schools.

About the Symbolic Migration
http://www.learner.org/jnorth/tm/symbolic/AboutFall.html
This fall, the 11th annual "Symbolic Monarch Butterfly Migration" is taking place across North America. Students in the United States and Canada are creating thousands of paper butterflies that will migrate to their counterparts in Mexico for the winter. You're invited to join the celebration.

How to Make a Symbolic Monarch
http://www.learner.org/jnorth/tm/symbolic/Make.html
Monarchs depend on the Mexican people for survival each winter. How can the butterfly you make serve as an ambassador of goodwill? How can it represent you and express your appreciation?

Please Support Monarch Butterfly Conservation in Mexico
The forest sanctuaries in Mexico are critical to the survival of the monarch's migration. They are now seriously threatened by deforestation activities. We urge you to support monarch habitat in Mexico by contributing to the "Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary Foundation" (http://www.mbsf.org). Imagine your paper butterflies carrying support for the real monarchs with them when they go! Please do whatever you can to help.

Tagging Monarchs
koncreteblonde--
I confess I don't really understand the 'symbolic' migration although I didn't take the time to read the details.
I did find this map of the 2006 Migration. And I see there are some points marked for near the New York Canadian border.

I wonder if those areas are near 'Erynne's' home. She reported a large clutch of Monarchs in her tree--very fascinating... http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/644524/
I confess I wouldn't know how to 'tag' if I could catch a monarch. It seems like it would hurt them...
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/641683/ We are getting quite a few Monarchs flying around our garden, but nothing at all like Erynne's!
I don't get enough Monarchs. I am lucky to have 2 or 3 except when they hatch out for me. I did find cats today on my milkweed and Calotropis. Mom only stayed a few days and is gone
I don't try and tag the ones that come into my yard but I have tagged the ones I raised. It's easy to do before you release them because they are usually so calm.
I've got about 10 Monarch's and Queen's making their chrysalis right now. Hopefully all will go well and I won't have any losses from that virus, or whatever it was.
I'm not in a flight path that leads mass numbers at once but when they start migrating they will come right past my house. It's great. They will just float in one or two at a time but I've had about 20 at once too. They come from the north and float right into my garden. Some will stay but some don't. We can stand outside and watch them come down like they are going to feed but then swoop right back up over the top of my house and the across the street, which is south to Mexico. I sure hope they come again this year!
I noticed a few strong fliers yesterday which makes me think they are on their way. One layed several eggs as I watched. I collected about 10 last night.
The Symbolic thing is for kids to color butterfly pictures to send to kids in Mexico. Then when the Monarch's come back the kids in Mexico send the butterflies back to our kids with messages written to them. I'm going to show my son's teacher.
