Winterizing a Fountain???

Sugar Valley, GA(Zone 7b)

Hi Everyone...

I have a cement fountain system that I am going to be moving north with me this winter, and I am wondering if it can be kept running...My Hubby said put antifreeze in it.. Im not too sure about that.. Firstly what it would do to the pump system..and second its toxic to animals...Any Ideas??

if you will be useing that out side id not put any anti freeze in it it will wreck your pump and if the boys in green get wind of it you may get in hot water Paul

I was wondering what climate zone. If it is far enough North to really freeze hard, I would drain it and keep it covered for the winter. Somewhere inbetween you may get by with just using a small tank heater. Or put an extra pump in the reservoir to keep the water agitated. Only problem with that would be if there is a power outage for a couple days, it could freeze and break.

What I do here in zone 7 OR, first light freeze I unplug it, drain it, cover with a tarp, I have had it for 10 years now and yes, we have hard freezes and snow...Hope this helps

Please oh please if you want to ever put this outside never use anti freeze as the animals will die plus it will stay in the cement forever no matter what you do..a guy here in Albany told me all this and he makes and sells all fountains.

Thank you all ..

I just knew that antifreeze would not be an option...I have dogs and I know the dangers of death if they get into it, and I certainly dont want a coon or squirrel to do it either...It is easily drained, so thats just what Ill do...
