We went SOUTH!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Lali and I went to Santa Barbara for a tuberose begonia show. We had great fun. I so wanted to grow some of these beauties once I saw how spectacular they could be. Paul Carlisle of Los Osos grew all of these huge beauties. The show was at Gazebo Flowers in Santa Barbara, a florist shop and a begonia paradise owned by Mike Flaherty.

Wow, great shots Kell! I've been so buys I haven't had time to post anything from the Thelma and Louise road trip! (ours has a different ending. We come home with a car full - and I mean FULL of begonias, philodendrons, diffs and other various 'cant live without' goodies!)

The tuberous were amazing. And the size of the blooms were unbelievable! Here's my hand against a cluster of beauties.

Wowzers!! I have only one this year (well besides the smaller common ones from the nurseries) and it's mt first time trying them and I am so surprised at the large size of the blooms and leaves and how easy it is to grow that I am definately trying more next year!

(GayLynn) Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Stunning beauties! Wow. I've tried to grow them in the past without much luck. Guess I'll have to give it another go. Great shots.

Fruitport, MI(Zone 5a)

What beauties! And the size of them too. Did they happen to give any good places to purchase bulbs? Maybe we could do a coop in the spring.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I am all for a coop. I am going to grow more too. They are gaud blooms for sure.

OH yeah!!! Co-op!

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

They are gorgeous Kell. My mom lives in Dublin and has had great luck growing these begonia's in her mostly filtered shade back yard.

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

Since we are talking about these gorgeous begonias..How do you save the tubers over the winter..would they still live in the house like a house plant?..I have one that I adore and would love to save it for next year...Judy

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

hey there judy, check out the sticky link - I put a few in there on tuberous care and storage.

Im heading there now......Judy

Patricia, that is good news. I have grown some over the years but with no special treatment! It is time for some love.

Kell,

What's your secret? I over the edge at 10b, huh?

Looks like you are having fun.... Beautiful pix.

Hap

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Hap, none of those are mine. Those are all from a show I went to and all grown by Paul Carlisle.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

But, how would they do in 10b?

Dern, I thought that were all yours.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Double dern, they are not. LOL.

I have no clue if they will do OK where you are Hap. I do know they are very prone to mildew. You should try one. I am going to try more too this next year and take better care of them. They are just gorgeous.

The grower of these beauties sprays them a lot for mildew he told me so he wanted me to stop drooling on them and causing more mildew.

Lisbon, Portugal(Zone 10a)

Hi!

I have two of those beauties in my balcony - they are simply lovely..... I have an orange one and a creamy yellow with the darkest green leaves ever..... I hold my breath every morning when I look at them!

Gotta get a digital camera, I'd love to show you pics!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

We would love to see them! Get a camera.
