Colocasia coffee cups.

Louisville, KY

Well I was probably the second or third person in the states to get this beauty. It cost me around 150.00 to get it then LOL. Now they go for much cheeper. It has been a great addition to the landscape. It looks like no other colocasia I have seen it is the only one I know of were the tips will stick upwards I have never seen a flower on it and wonder if anyone has? My plant is now around 7 feet tall the leaves do not get huge but are very cupped up. It is a must have for the elephant ear grower. So here are some pics of it in my garden this year. Anyone get one larger than this??

I have one the first year for it, it is only about 4 ft. tall. I haven't been feeding it real regular either, but yesterday the temps here were descend so I got out and gave everything I have some fertilizer. I looked out my kitchen window a little while ago and everything isn't laying on the ground, so I guess they didn't go into shock.

Mine is about 18-24 inches, doing great and putting on new leaves. It's in a pot and I suppose it would do better in the ground but I wanted it on the deck so that I could see it close up. The leaves stay upright even when they're holding water. I would post a picture but they're at home and I'm at work.

How cold hardy is it?

I just love it! So, when the leaves (cups) are holding water, do they empty with the wind or just continue holding till it evaporates? I sound kind of silly asking the question, but... I wanna know. I'm intrigued..

Well in big rains they drop water once full and raise back up. After the rain a few scared me when I was pollinating having full leaves of water dump on me next to the other plants. I have seen water in them for up to 5 days after a rain. Big dipper is similar but does not keep the water in them as long the coffee cups is much deeper.

Aunt B, I've watched mine. If the water level gets deep enough (while it raining etc) the leaf will droop to one side and the water pours out. If it's just a drop or two, it sits in the cup. Quite interesting.

Gosh, you almost would think of putting a mosquito dunk in them if they hold water for that long! (just joking) But then when they fill up and tip over the dunk would fall out. oh well.

I think I'd be tempted to empty them... wonder if it matters?

B, if I notice standing water, I tip it out too. Don't need to breed mosquitoes.
