I have noticed in various threads that most of us have difficulty germinating clematis seed.I have had awfully bad luck, until 10 days ago. I started some seeds and now have 9 clematis plants with their second set of leaves.Obviously they won't be ready to go until fall when the weather cools off and they have gotten larger, however, they are up for grabs. if it is any help, i will tell you what i did to germinate them. When i visited my friend Howard i admired his plant and he told me i could have all the seed i wanted(he is a master gardener and also has trouble germinating them)Well, only one flower was spent and had gone to seed, so i plucked it, brought it home and put the whole thing in soil. That was 10 days ago and the litle guys are about an inch tall. Could it be as easy as using fresh seed...i have no idea, perhaps i just got lucky
At any rate, the flowers are purple and the centers are yellow, and they are beautiful...so if you want clemstis in the fall..keep me in mind. I will continue starting these seeds everytime i see a spent flower ands i go through Howard's yard, which is about every other day on my way to the store to get my smokes

I sure will Coco. I'll include it with your rooted rose cutting which should be fairly soon.I'll at least wait long enough for the plant to get a bit bigger and have substantial leaf and root growth
Sandy
Thank you Sandy
Be sure to let me know what extra postage is needed.
My Best to You.

Dear Sandy: I would love to try one of your clematis this fall. I have a start of what was described to me wild sweet autumn clematis maybe you would like me to try a start for you or some seed when it blooms? Thanks,
Delisa
Hi Sandy me again
I am going to send you my clematis seeds for you to start I haven't had any luck.I got these from my mother in law they are a white one but she didn't know the name.
Put me down for one of yours and then if you can get one from hers then send me one of that when you can.
Is that okay? I'll even rape, pillage, and burn to get one. LOl Mike
Sandy, it's me, down here in Texas. See me jumping up and down, waving my hands?~~~~^^^^^~~~?

I'm jumping up and down,I'm going to run around town and steal seeds from clematis I've been drooling over,Just kiddin , but I am going to grab my seeds off mine and try it!!!
Sandy, If you have any left after your generocity, I would like you to earmark one for me. Start thinking of things that you would want to trade for it.
thanks/pebble
Sandy, please put me in line for one of your clematis.
I could never get them to come up from seeds, but I've wasted lots of them trying.
Thanks, thanks..
cazique
Oh Sandy, could I please also? I haven't had much luck trying to get them to start too. You may have discovered the secret in getting them to grow. I'll find something to trade!!! Doris
O.k....I put all your names in my book for the clematis, and you've all got one. I picked some more fresh sed today and put it in that good luck starter pot also, so maybe we can get some more. I was pretty excited to see them pop up, i must admit
Mike...no problem you have one of these, but i only had the good luck with freah seed right off the plant.you might be wise to get some of your mother-in-laws seed and just try to start it while it is really fresh..I will try whatever you send, though, and keep you posted..cross your fingers
Sandy
Doris(djm)..I'm not looking for a trade, i'm just offering these
Delisa.I would love some seed when you get it.sounds very pretty(i think sweet autumn is what this plant was , but i can't guarantee the flower color because they were open pollinated
I will post for addy's that i don't already have in about a month.
Thanks all
Sandy
I'll send them in the morning. thanks Mike
if there are any left, sign me up?
Hi, are there are any left ?
email me with your address and I will send a sase asap
Thanks bunches
Rita
I just(yesterday) started more fresh seed and i will continue trying to get more as long as this and any other
of my clematis put out fresh seed. i have written all names in my book and will try to get as many as i can to germinate, and i will gladly send them out to as many people as i have plants for. i am only hoping that my luck with the fresh seed holds up. when they are ready the best that i can do is go down the list and notify as many people as i have plants for..one little request.i may need to ask for postage, but it won't be much because by the time they are big enough to travel, the weather will have cooled down. cross your fingers for the sedlings and just maybe evryone will get lucky with fresh seed. a friend of mine is a master gardener and he has told me repeatedly that they are difficult to germinate. i guess it says somthing for dumb luck.some of my second batch of climbimg roses have started developing little roots finally, so i'll probably pass some of these climbers right along with the clematis next month(actually they are a lt. red or a dark pink..which ever terminology you want to use)
sandy
thanks sandy, for your patience and generosity!!
:-)
Sandy,
Question???? Hello,. Can you hear me ok? Good.
I wanted to ask you just what type of seed starter mix do you use? I have tried and tried to start things from seed and 99% of the time I have failed. My seeds just will not come up...........pleeeeeease help! Thank you.
CoCo
I've got tear drops.....tear drops fallin on my lap!
Hi CoCo,
All i started them in was a mix of potting soil, vermiculite, and peat.Just dumb luck
For everyone past the nine requests that i am able to fill(the first nine)..i have started and hopefully will have more come up. I don't know if the original ones were just dumb luck, or if it was because it was very fresh seed
sandy
Thanks Sandy for the info. Appreciate it.
All My Best
CoCo
hi sandy,

"All i started them in was a mix of potting soil, vermiculite, and peat"
I buy this stuff premixed and start all my seeds and cuttings in it with great success.
I have large Clematis viticella with light purple flowers, and it grows every year so vigorously, that it fills up our big trellis... If someone is interested in cuttings, conctact me ;-) This is very hardy and one of the most easiest species. I'll have seeds also in the fall.
Evert- i would love a cutting or some seeds to try. Will trade or sase.New to this but would love to try.
Hmm... I don't see anything that I could use on your tradelist.. But. How many cuttings would u like then?
A couple I suppose, so if one don't work maybe the other will. I thank you very much. also I will have lots more seeds soon, so if you see something then, i will remember how nice you are and send you some then if something strikes your eye!
