New Philodendron

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Here is a new plant that I got recently, Philodendron 'Silver' or Scindapsus picta. I have had many philodendrons but I've never seen one like this before. I have cut back on buying plants since I have so many but this one was just to pretty to pass up. So I had to add it to my collection. Most of my plants are in the new greenhouse that DH just had built for me but the really pretty "houseplants" I keep inside. And most of them are doing quite well.

She's a beaut Jesse! The leaves are gorgeous, yet feel so leathery. It's not a fast grower, for me anyways. I have a small pot of it and took a cutting this summer for insurance purposes. LOL

That is a smart idea. I sure wish I had done that with each plant that I have bought. I've lost so many. Thanks for the idea.

I have one of these at work, it's such a pretty plant. Yours looks like a lovely specimen. I love the silver spots.

Ah man, I had one of those, but I killed it somehow. It was so pretty when I bought it.

Yours is beautiful!!

That is a beauty. I had one of those and lost it also. It loved the fluorescent lights in the office but when I took it home, it went into decline. It seems to grow so very slowly.

Lovely plant!

GrowHappy - good idea about taking cuttings - just don't know where I'd put them!

Wooconley, are you kidding? You can always find a space for more plants. LOL Surely, you could squeeze it in between some larger plants or something? What about on top of the coffee table? Fridge? LOL

LOL...listen to you, GH.....tsk, tsk Ü

I've found cuttings of this little stinker difficult to root....anyone else?

So I was thinking, as GH said...the top of the (nice warm) fridge!
I've been able to root a lot up there!

Yours is lovely, Jesse....the first time I saw this one 'in person' I couldn't resist, either!

Nan, I have problems with rooting and growing in general. I have had at least two and they both didn't make it. Plus several cuttings. Any tips anyone?

now that's a cool looking plant!

I got a cutting in the first houseplant swap. Didn't know what the name of it was until this thread came up. Mine is growing outside. I'm about to take cuttings and try to root to add some volume to the pot. It's growing in morning sun and is doing really well. The humidity is high here so maybe it likes the moisture in the air.

I have one that has been growing on the top of my Hoosier cabinet for about 10 years. It's spindly and almost touches the floor (what's that, about 6 and a half feel long?) any way, I lopped one of the long vines off and cut it into lots of little pieces and put them in a 3" pot to root. I figure if they take, i'll plant them back in the mom's pot so it will fill out at the top again. I used MG potting soil with lots of extra perlite and put the pot in my south/west kitchen window.

Jesse yours is so lush and full. Mine was like that once. But it's been many years and the poor thing has gone bone dry and done a swan dive off the top of the hutch many times! LOL. It basically gets ignored and I water it once a month or so. I take it out side when the weather permits and give it a good shower every so often.

I love the silver spot! Problem is, I've bought three so far, and all the vines die but one! I should mention that's why I love the "one-year warrantee policy". Lowes received a new lot in of little tropical plants that had a few silver spots, but they were gone when I went back two days later to buy one.

Everyone says philos are so easy to grow, but I have the darndest time with them!

I was wondering how deep to plant my philodendrons. The Moonlight and the Prince of Orange both came in the cute little pot but it is only about 2 to 3 inches deep. Should I repot them in a deeper pot? Both of them don't appear to be the trailing kind and I'm unsure how to care for them. What do you all think?
