2 cuttings, different growth

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I received these cuttings from JungleBob back in April. The larger one is a white and the smaller is a yellow. They were identical in size and started the same day. Isn't the difference in growth amazing?

Quite astonishing yes, but not unusual for what are obviously two different cultivars.

Not unusual at all. I sometimes have noticed differences with the same cultivars. I have some twenty five seedlings from one of my plants that are a little over one year old. Some are almost three feet tall and some are a foot.

Hi Alice,

It looks like the yellow one may have flowered recently as I think I see new branches. Flowering takes a lot of energy to complete, and the yellow now has three branches to push out -- I think I see three branches -- where as the white just has one with no flowering. The flowering. no doubt. delayed root formation and growth -- i.e., slowed it down. But it is true that different cultivars have different growth rates, given the same nutrients, the same watering, and the same growing conditions. Differing the growing conditions will also affect growth rate.

Thanks Clare, yes there are three tiny branches on the yellow one. It must have bloomed before Bob cut it. That would explain the tardiness. The white one is 3' and just so strong and healthy.
