I'm thinking my A. nervosa is going to bloom!!
Don't know how many to expect before it gets too cold, but it looks like it's budding up.
Oh, joy!
Argyreia: Oh, can it really be a bloom?
How exciting!!!!
Wooohoooooo! It looks like it to me.
:) Donna
Someone get an IV and a paper bag for Robert.
Robert,
That will be great! Are you growing that in the pot or in the ground there in Bessemer City? How long have you had it?
Barbara
Edited: Just read your other thread, Robert, so you already answered the questions. Thanks!

Its less than a year-and-a-half old and is at least 15 feet long (can't say "tall" exactly--it goes up 7 feet then runs across at least that far).
An amazing grower!
It's just a race now to get those buds to open before it gets too cool........
I am considering giving it to anyone who will pick it up and give it a warm greenhouse to live in or take to *way* down south...............
Robert.
I don't know anything about that vine but the bud looks to be a leaf bud and not a bloom (bud). All photos show unraveling of foliage rather than of flowers, except maybe the last, and that I can't say either way on.
Very nice vine though!
Dax
Look beside the small, closed gray leaf in the center.
The bud petiole comes from the same point and is pointing about 45 degrees to the upeer left. To the lower left of that, you can see the leafy vine tip continuing on.
There are gray bracts covering the actual flower bud.
Robert.

I'll have to agree with you Robert. I can see where that could easily be a bloom, but I still wouldn't be surprised if there are leaves under that sheath. I'm not doubting you though. I've just seen a lot of stuff just like this happen in the past where a leaf unfolded while I 'patiently' waited!
Thanks still (for the descriptionary words) and I'll certainly keep my fingers crossed for ya! I'm sure also that I'm the Donkey here or the one at least wearing a blindfold.
Take care,
Dax
Looks like a flower bud to me. Hope you have time to enjoy the blooms before the cold sets in. You don't have to give it away Robert after all your effort, just cut it way back and take it in for the winter. You will have a head start for next yrs growing and blooming season.
Jackie
I really like that vine - it is so unflawed- can't wait to see the flowers!

Jackie~
I'm gonna do that. I just hate to give up such luxurious foliage even if I don't get blooms.
Thanks for the encouragement.
Robert.

Second that!
I needed "smelling salts" when I saw the buds. I know I will just keel over when I see them open.
Robert.
Enjoy Robert!
Dax
Robert, if you are going to cut it back for winter, do you think the clippings would root? If so, I'll send you $$ for postage & keep them warm all winter in S Texas. (Trying not to beg)
Also, just read that it blooms the second yr, so if this is your first yr, it must really love you!!! :~)
Smockette~
I read that it can be increased by cuttings, but don't know where I read that. Somewhere on the internet, I'm sure. I would think bottom heat would be a plus. Can't tell you anything else. I'll see if I can find any details. If you come up with anything, please share your findings.
I just read that it blooms both spring and fall (daylength must be a factor). That's a plus.
I'll D-mail you about cuttings from it.
Robert.
FANTASTIC!
I personally may not be of very much help, but I've saved several links I've come across:
http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/hil/hil-8700.html
http://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profiles0702/climber_prop.asp
Then, I've had relative success propagating vines using the method described in this Daves link. I've successfully propagated several Clematis and Passiflora.

It's awesome, Robert. Are you getting more blooms?
:) Donna
The first bloom lasted only a day. Yesterday morning it had already fallen by the time I saw it.
No bloom yesterday or today. :-(
But, the clusters are enlarging each day. :-)
I hope I get a good flush before it's over with.
Robert.
So cool!
:) Donna
Well done old chap!
Good luck on propagation.
Kenton
(PlantFiles could use bud and flower profile pictures...)
Thanks Kenton.
I had two more blooms yesterday, none today.
This weekend, temps are dipping into the 40sF, so the show may be ending for good.
We'll see.
Robert.
Well folks, the show is over as far as I can see, due to the cool nights. Several buds enlarged during the warm days and should have opened right after that. (I'm not sure if they open before or after dawn.) But they just stalled there, fully developed, and dropped off, unopened on the second or third day.
It's still full of buds which seem to still be developing, I just doubt I'll see any more open. O well.
It was great to at least see a few. I love this vine for the great foliage alone and the blossoms were cherries on that cake.
Robert.
Hope you got it propagated/seed pods started.
Ooooooh so pretty! Is it still blooming?
Sharon
Sharon~
Glad you asked that. I posted on Oct.2 that the buds weren't opening and were dropping off. I thought it was the cool nights.
But by the weekend, I had a dozen or more to open one day! And the nights were still cool and the days moderately warm. The only thing that may have been affecting the blooming is that it is a *huge* vine and the pot would run dry due to the pull on the moisture and the heat of the days, but I was watering more so that it didn't ever go dry. So, maybe it was going dry that was causing the buds to drop.
Anyway, I should have said, *was* a huge vine. I cut it back to about half (still over 6 feet tall) and sent the cuttings to a DGer to try to root. I'll be taking the vine in for the winter, maybe by this weekend if temps dip too low, but soon anyway.
I can't say enough good about this vine.
Robert.
Just hope this DGer can make it grow!
I'm very excited about it moving to S Texas.
:~)
;-)
Good Luck Smockette - let us know how the transplant goes!
