I have an Ameicana hen that lays the green eggs. They are nice, but it seems they don't have the sheen on the shell that the other eggs have. They are kind of a dull texture and when they get dirty, the stains just won't wash off...........as if there's no sheen-type coating. They just look dirty, even after washed.
Anyone else notice this with any of their eggs? Since I only have the one Americana hen, I didn't know if this is common with the breed. She eats all the same things all the others eat, so I wouldn't think it's diet.
Americana eggs......green, different texture
My ameraucana eggs are spotty looking and have a matte "finish" rather than a glossy one.
Same here! Plus, the membrane between the shell and the inside of the egg is tougher than usual, and the yolk is very orange. What cool eggs!
Mine too...a much duller egg that stains easier...but no one seems to mind with the beautiful greens and blues!
MisFit, the Araucauna with the crooked beak, just started laying small green eggs that also have the matte finish and stain easily. I feel like I'm talking about paint :) I tried an alchohol swab on one that was stained and it seemed to help some. I wonder if that would affect how long it would stay fresh though. I can leave my eggs out on the counter for a few days no problem, but a boiled egg,,,,uh huh. They have to go straight into the fridge but maybe you guys already knew that. Haven't cracked em open yet. Maybe for breakfast tomorrow. YUM!
Some of our white and brown eggs have that 'embellished' feel - we thought maybe it was the oyster shell, ya think?? We haven't fed oyster shell long and the eggs were smooth before we started using it. I dunno but they love that stuff...
