Seed sending question

Fountain, FL(Zone 8a)

I've been collecting datura seeds, blackberry lily, petite marigold as well as others. I print out seed packets from the computer and put them together. Will the seeds put in the packets and then in a REGULAR envelope travel alright or should they go into a bubble envelope? I need to sort through the seeds and then will have for self addressed envelopes, but need to know what type of envelope? Question clear as mud? LOL

Some seeds are really really tiny and go thru regular mail ok, it's the other seeds that are squishable that get squished. :o)

Yes like canna seeds! I made that mistake once just starting out by not using a bubble mailer. They arrived more like canna seed dust! Hate when that happens! : (

You can buy a roll of bubble wrap cheaper than the packs of bubble envelopes. If you make a fold in little square of bubble wrap and stick your seed packs in it they can travel safely in a regular business size envelope. I've actually recv'd several trades this way and just bought my first roll of bubble wrap for about $2.00 at walmart....

Even with tiny seeds, I'd use a BE. Regular envelopes can get trashed by the machinery, and then the packets get torn or lost... not something you want to have happen after the work you put into growing, harvesting, drying, bagging etc. when you use a BE (or a 5x7 envelope with bubble wrap tucked inside), it won't get sent through the sorting machinery. Business envelopes often get sent right on to the machines, even with a note to "please hand cancel." And if you're going to pop for the extra 13 cents postage to hand cancel, I'd go all the way and use a BE. :-)

And just a note because you mentioned printing out seed packets... That's a great idea, but please be sure to cut them out with little flaps to fold over the edges and tape... I've received a couple of packets that were just constructed by making a single fold in a piece of paper and taping around the edges, and the tiny seeds were all stuck to the tape.

Absolutely --- bubble envelopes. No bubble wrap inside env's no regular env's - bubble envelopes.

Sorry, but I often use business envelopes with bubble wrap inside if there are only a few packets, but I tape all the seems on the business envelope. I use the commercially made bubble envelopes when sending out of the country or with larger shippings. I've never had a complaint. It is important to remember that writing 'hand cancel' doesn't work if you try to send the envelope with a 39 cent stamp. You need to pay for hand cancelling or irregular sized envelope, which runs around 51 cents.

As for the inner packets, I use glasine envelopes inside my own paper packets, and those packets have webbed corners so there is no chance of leakage. Critter is right about the seeds sticking to tape, and I've also received many packages that had seeds all mixed up in the corner of the envelope. It is not an issue with large seeds, but with smaller ones, it is important to seal the packets well.

hey weezingreens,
this may sound like a dumb question, but....
what is hand canceling?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Hand canceling means the envelope doesn't go through the automated machinery... Instead, a person rubberstamps the cancellation mark on the postage, thereby cancelling by hand.

Hand canceling or irregular sized envelope postage is currently 52 cents for packets weighing less than 1 oz.
