Busy repotting and transplanting

Drumheller, AB(Zone 2a)

Hello everyone!

Sorry I haven't been around but I am busy getting ready for a plant sale this weekend. I am getting rid of a lot of my noids to make room for more name brand plants as I call them.

I was so tired yesterday....repotted and separated and transplanted violets from 9 AM to 8 PM...got a lot done and I am getting a lot more room now. I have them all out on the deck in big Rubbermaid containers so they are well protected and the deck is covered.

I had a bunch of leaves from the violet show in April and I got 13 Buckeyes I have to separate and transplant yet.

So hope everyone is doing well...

Hey Joanne,
Sounds like you've been busy! Are you working on plants for a club sale? Lucky you on the Buckeye's. Do you have 13 different varieties?

Every now and then, I do the same as far as taking inventory and deciding which ones are worthy to take up space. We all only have so much room and if we keep adding more, somethings gotta give.

I have a bunch of leaves w/babies that I really need to get busy on. See? More violets :0)

Hi Snowrose,

Yes I had babies that were way overdue for transplanting. I am just making room for the brand name violets now....I have another 3-tier lightstand coming around the middle of September so I want to clear what I can as I have more transplanting to get done yet.

I am just having a yard sale but instead of selling odds and ends I am selling houseplants to make room for my transplants. It is so much work though.

I split the violet Accent yesterday and I got 19 plants from 2 leaves!!! Talk about more violets! Oh well if I can sell them for a 1.00 a piece that is okay. It is a beautiful violet that one.

Accent (Volkmann) Light and dark orchid two-tone/green ruffled edge. Dark green, round, quilted. Standard

These are the Buckeyes that I have and I love them so much:

Buckeye Ballet Master
Buckeye Blithe Spirit
Buckeye Crackerjack
Buckeye Cranapple
Buckeye Especially Mine
Buckeye Extravaganza
Buckeye Fancy Pants
Buckeye Get Happy
Buckeye In Frills
Buckeye Incongnito
Buckeye Melancholy Mood
Buckeye Mood Music
Buckeye Ruby Tuesday
Buckeye Summer Song

Oh I have 14 different ones!

Well I hope you get yours done...it is so hard to throw a leaf away or a small baby even....I try to save every one....LOL!

I bet you will do well selling your violets but yes, you are right about yard sales being a lot of work. I'd say your Volkmann 'Accent' was a prolific producer! Do you have a photo? None in FC.

Super Buckeye collection you've got. I really do like those. Wish we could do some trading. Trying to think of the ones I have offhand that you don't have.....

B. Cranberry Sparkler
B. Colossal
B. Concerto
B. Damask Rose
B. Boysenberry
B. Cherry Topping
B. Gift wrapped
B. Fiesta (leaf)
B. Rockin Robin
B. Candy Striper
B. Cherry Freckles

Would love to add 'Buckeye Leprechaun Charm'. Have 'Buckeye Incognito" and find the white edge to be vary variable. Like it very much though.

Good luck on your sales and hope you will have lots of buyers!

Hi Snowrose,

Oh I wish we could too...I only have two fully growin Buckeyes....the rest are all babies yet....must repot as soon as I get my stand.

I am sending a photo of Accent, it isn't mine but it is so beautiful!

Thanks for wishing me well with the sale....hope I do well too!

Speaking of re-potting, I had quite a challenging one to do just the other day. My Champagne Pink (semi-mini trailer) had gotten badly in need of repotting, grooming, etc.

It had grown to 24" across, so not so easy to do and I had been putting it off. The poor thing lost so much of it's beautiful variegation due to the seemingly unending heat we've had this summer.

I thought this would be the perfect time to do 'mold potting' as I do so often. I will explain.

Here she is before....

I removed this plant from the pot she was in and basically potted the pot she was in into the new 10" basket type pot I was going to move her up to. I had already put the wicks in place. Used 3 strands.

Then I removed the old pot and set the plant into the 'molded' hole of which the rootball fits perfectly.

Here is the somewhat rejuvinated plant after having 5 crowns removed and tons of leaves. The final step was removing all the buds and blossoms so she could put all her energy into growing roots and foliage. In about 6 weeks, I expect she will look so much better and be so happy with her fresh soil.

Great info & pics of the process!
Your plant is beautiful.

Did you say you potted it UP into a 10 inch hanging basket???

Thanks for the great lesson!!

Thanks! Yes, I potted it up to a 10" basket pot and as you can see it overhangs even after removing quite a bit. Like I said, the plant was 24" across when I started. That's why I kept putting the repotting job off. Really wasn't bad using the 'mold potting' method. I have gone over to doing that most of the time when potting up. Makes it so much easier and less stressful to the plant. Plunk the plant into the molded hole, then a few raps on the counter or the pot to settle the soil. I set the pot into a bowl of tepid water to water when done. Then onto the reservoir with 1/4 teaspoon of 12-36-14 per gallon of water added to encourage root growth.

Wow Snow!
That's an incredible trailer.I applaud your expertise! :)

I can't wait for mine to grow a bit more.

Thanks for telling me you set it in a bowl of water to water it..lol
I was just fixin to ask that very question.

(MsC invisioning myself dropping a plant in kitchen sink...lol)

So, if you don't mind me asking... can you show us a shot of th depth of the 10 in pot?? also...what size pot was it in before the transplant??
I'd like it for reference.

Great info!

Thanks so much,
MsC

LOL on dropping the pot!!! Would be quite a mess!! But have had a few accidents. Like the time the hanger came loose from a basket plant and I found it smashed with soil spilled out all over. Not a violet thank goodness.

I went down and measured the depth of the 10" pot and it is 6". I think the pot it was in was 8" but might have been a 6". It needed repotting badly. I found this basket at Walmart and liked the soft green color.

In my experience, keeping trailers disbudded helps to grow out a better plant and promotes vegetative growth. Seems like when not allowed to bloom, they put out more crowns. Also, some trailers are just better than others. Do you have Ramblin' Dots?
I just got a leaf back of that variety which I loved and grew years ago. Made a great hanging basket plant. Also, new to me is Ramblin' Spots. Just have babies at present.

Hi Snowrose,

I love both of those pictures of your trailer...how old is that plant? Wow!!! 24 inches across....oh I can just see that one sitting on my coffee table...

TFS!

I ordered Champagne Pink from Lyon's two years ago. Would be pretty on a coffee table to enjoy for a while.

Morning!

Well my sale went not too badly....made $217.00 but I have tons of babies left so I called some friends and they came and picked out what they wanted. I have another friend coming today to pick out what she wants. My hubby is taking a tray to the senior center and the rest I will be taking to the Salvation Army.

My prices were very reasonable...$2.00 for plants in 4" pots, $2.00 for the name brands in 3 oz solo cups and $1.00 for no name brands....so they can't say the prices were too expensive.

I have learned a lesson though.....I will not start every leaf I see anymore. I will just have a couple down and that is it! Way too much work and very little profit.

Hi Joanne,
You must be tired... your buyers were very fortunate to be able to purchase your plants for such reasonable prices and your donations will brighten up someone's day.

I've been potting up babies from leaves for a few days now and can totally relate. Why do I need 12 more Apache Freedom's for starters??? Plus, plus, plus....LOL!!! What in the world am I going to do with all these beautiful babies? I just can't bring myself to just pitch them when I see those pretty pink leaves. Maybe it's just OCD?

Glad you made a little money and should go a long way on your new plant stand :0)

Drumheller, AB(Zone 2a)

Hi Snowrose,

Thank you for the reply. Yes I am just wiped out. My friend just left with a tray of violets all in bloom. She thought she was being greedy and I said no, take more....less I have to haul in every night because we are getting very close to frost now.

Tossing leaves seems a whole lot easier for me right now...LOL!!! But I know what you mean. From now on I will just take them to the girls at the Salvation Army....I know them all and I have taken them leaves in the past and explained how to pot them up and they really appreciate it.

Yes the money will definitely help towards the lightstand. I really am getting anxious for it as I need the space now.

I have warned them too to make sure they spray them and keep them isolated from their other plants as being outside most anything could be on them.

Well I just had chili and toast and now going for a little nap.

Joanne

Hi Joanne,
AV sales are so hard to find in Georgia, I would love to walk up to a garage sale and find a table of violets. How lucky your neighbors are. It's even hard to find AV's at nurseries here, no one carries Optimaras anymore and the few violets you do find are always on the clearance table where someone has watered them too much. We do have a few clubs that have shows and sales several times a year, but Boy you had better be early and be ready to grab. That is the reason I joined Dave's garden, not only to get growing tips and see how everyone else grows AV's in their homes, but to maybe have an outlet for all those leaves and extra babies I throw away when I repot and maybe, just maybe to have some people to trade with.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

It sure is hard to toss out leaves or babies, even ones that aren't in the best of shape or aren't growing well... I've gotten better about that, but I've still got trays of them in various stages! Since I'm on "light duty" for a couple of weeks, I'm going to catch up on AV tasks and get a few planned trade boxes out the door, and then hopefully I'll be able to put some more trades together. :-)

Yes that was a very hard lesson to learn. The first time you look around that spare room and it's wall to wall leaf cups or baby cups and you think Holy Moly what am I going to do. You learn reql quuick to only pot up 2 at the most off of each leaf.
Susan
