I work in a highrise - and every month they sell the lobby plants for 3 bucks each...including bromeliads. I bought a bunch of them last year, and they have been prosperous. Unfortuneatly no tags, but I think it is Aechmea fulgens var. fulgens...until now I've been too lazy to look it up. I have 2 of them, and they are both putting out a couple of pups, soo guess more for next year too!
. Hmm..wonder what the lobby plants are for september......
? second generation
That looks much like Aechmea fulgens, but given the branching it might be one of very many fulgens hybrids.
Dave.
Thanks Dave,
I scanned the plantfiles and the threads- and a bromeliad site, so a hybrid would make sense.

I work in downtown Tampa and the building next door has quite a few bromeliads in the lobby. I saw a lady walking down the sidewalk with some one day and she said she was a member of the Bromeliad Guild here. Apparently, she has a deal with the plant supplier - she gets the bromeliads and trades him the orchids she grows (I hear she has over 100 kinds). Your bromeliad is beautiful, I usually just see the standard guzmanias and neoregelias used for decorating. If you get lots of babies you could pot them up nice and give them as Christmas presents! I've got a guzmania that just had about twenty pups on it so I'm going to be giving them away at the next DG Round Up. Gotta spread the joy!
I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of bromeliads here..course, they also stock the lobby with orchids too. I can always tell the success of the property owners, by the types of plants they stock in the lobby. You should have seen me stuffing bromeliads in huge boxes as fast as I could. Your right in the fact that they do well in the pup area- I only had 1 last year- 2 this year - and it looks like 4 for next year. How in the world does it have 20 pups? Is it in the ground??
The security lady here knows I'm a plant freak- and she gives me the pick of unsold plants.. Ironically, more plants is the last thing I need!
I work for the county and the building next door is partially ours too. That's probably why our plants are so mediocre. Government never has money for those nice little extras. I'm sure the taxpayers would complain or there'd be some journalist doing an exposee about our excessive spending on plants to decorate our lobby. : )
I notice guzmanias tend to pup like crazy. It's funny, I picked that one up at the USF Botanical Gardens plant sale. I liked it because it was pretty. Well, there were two sitting there and I picked one up. The guy starts talking to me about it and I say what a good deal it is. It was about $10, but there were all these pups on it! There was a lady near me listening, and she said, "I think I'll take the other one!" When I separated them the other day I felt like I was just peeling layers and layers off of it. Here's a pic of it with some of my other bromeliads hanging out in the background.
Wow- so you do have them in the ground. I keep mine in pots, but would like to try some of the earth lovin ones sometime. I know what you mean about peeling... It's still fresh in my mind from when I brought these guys out of the green house this spring. That and the other 20 or so. I put them and the orchids up in the rafters..they really do well.
LOL...yes, I have quite an image of a smug reporter sticking a microphone in someones face with their already "your guilty" smug look.
