Well, I rarely start putting my Fall veggies in before the last week of September (Arizona, yeah, it's still over 100 right now, ugh).....but I did get the little seeds in their grow pots today. It feels like such an accomplishment! I'm totally going to be doing some experimenting in my garden this season...like the introduction of the straw bales for example! I figure, that's a good visual border & divider and with the added benefit of being able to plant in it, how awesome!
Here's the seeds I started today: 10 varieties of tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, chives & fennel. Everything else I'll direct-sow in the ground (beans, peas, carrots, parsnips, spinach, lettuces, garlic, onions, turnips & beets)....I think that'll about do it for Fall. Ooh, an of course, the new asparagus bed (which I'm actually going to try to do in a trench in-between straw bales as well). Some of the tomatoes will go in the ground and some will go in bales...but they pretty much do good year round here...so I'm planning to put 1 plant of each variety in bales & the others in the ground, that way, I can have continual bale tomatoes & then rotate beds for the Spring tomatoes...that's the 'plan' anyway, lol...
Anyway, here's a little picture of some seed trays from today. This is my first time doing tomatoes from seeds, so I'm crossing my fingers they work. If they don't, I figure I've still got almost 4 weeks before I need to buy plants.

My seeds are started
Is that tape wrapped around toothpicks you are using? I am hoping to plant broccoli, kale, cauliflower and garlic for our 'fall', which is approaching fast!

Yes! It's yellow duct-tape! I broke bamboo skewers in half and wrapped the tape...easy to write on with marker & it repels the water. I was out of normal plant markers, but I like this method!
On an annoying note...my daughter's cat got into the garage today and knocked over the entire flat of cauliflower, broccoli, chives, fennel, etc....grrr....it's just lucky that he didn't knock over the tomato flat because then I would have been REEEEALLY angry!
What a difference in climate! I started tomatoes for fall about May 20th and broccoli and cauliflower in June. ...lettuce in August. The tomatoes are starting to ripen and the coles are going to head up in a month or so.
